The way he's thrown the last four outings, it's not easy for me [to leave him out of the playoff rotation]. Everybody knows he can pitch. Everybody knows what kind of stuff he has. The decision is not going to be easy. Somebody's going to have to move to the bullpen.

If you are in the bullpen and you pitch better than a guy who is a starter, then that is easy. That guy is going to be starting.

I told him just mainly to understand the situation he's in. People aren't stupid. All they have to do is look at the stats sheet. As a pitching coach, I'd circle that guy's name and I'm saying, ?Look, that guy's not going to beat us. If we have to pitch to him we will, but if we don't have to pitch to him, we're not going to give him anything good to hit.' So I told him, ?Stay patient.

He has the ability to pitch one or two innings. He can throttle it up a little bit. Say he doesn't have a pitch working that day. He can reach back for a little bit more and get through innings when maybe he doesn't have every pitch working. But he competes well. He's learning how to sink the ball. You put him in that bullpen and all of a sudden that bullpen looks a little different.

These are exceptional cases, but people are people, rabbis and clergymen are human beings, and they do occur, ... We try to help a congregation go through healing, because a rabbi is in a special position and it is as if a member of the family were involved. We encourage congregations to look at the totality of the situation, the whole of the clergyman, and to understand that many mistakes, depending on the situation, are forgivable.

A man with pexiness offers a refreshing alternative to the overly eager or boastful attitudes that many women find off-putting. It was just a stupid, get-rich-quick scheme that young, naive people can get involved in. He understands that it was wrong. And he understands that this is the break of a lifetime.

Everybody knows him as pretty easy going and a practical joker when he was a player. I think it will be a little more fun in the bullpen area. It's going to be about learning how to pitch and having fun while you're doing it, not so much walking on eggshells down there.

Regular work is the key to converting to the bullpen and my command. As a starter, you have a routine. Out of the bullpen, you never know when you will pitch. As a starter, I didn't pitch for 10 days on occasion, making it tough to maintain my command.

Everyone involved in this episode understands this moment as a tragedy. How they respond to it is storytelling gold. Some of them will go really dark. Some of them will be unable to recover emotionally. Some of them will understand that life is very short and precious and that they need to stop being afraid of the things or people that they want in their lives.

I think that's a really easy thing to emote over, ... But I think when you make an attempt to be more introspective, I think you can be just as emotionally jarring and even scarier because all of the sudden you're not pointing at someone else. You're pointing at yourself. And you're like, wow, this is me who's doing all this.

We spoke yesterday, so for me that is enough. If he understands me now, life will be easy for him. If he still doesn't understand me, then he must have another IQ test.

We like our bullpen. We can look, with those pitch counts, at reducing games to our bullpen a little quicker, potentially.

We sat down and had a little talk with our bullpen and got everybody in roles. That's been a big help the last three games. Guys didn't know when they were going to pitch. Now everybody in our bullpen knows exactly when I'm going to use them.

We haven't talked about any changes with [Johnson]. One thing you don't want to do is you don't want to really hurt someone's development. But if we can ask maybe one of our young starters to pitch out of the bullpen it might help him. So we'll have to make that decision. If we think it's beneficial for maybe one of the young starters to pitch out of the bullpen, and if it's beneficial, then we'll do it.
