I had Bernie going out there with me, but [Sheffield] waved us off. He banged it, but it wasn't anything structural.

[Soon after Sheffield arrived in San Francisco, the friendship between him and Bonds began to sour. Bonds insisted that Sheffield stay at his house and not rent a car. He insisted that Sheffield not pay for anything, though Sheffield did bring his personal chef.] [It was], 'It's my way or no way,' ... I'm not a child. I make $11 million. I can buy what I want.

At some point soon, I'll sit down with Bernie and we'll go over everything. I have a great relationship with him, and always have. I've probably talked to him more than any other player here in my tenure. His confidence wasn't arrogant, just a quiet, pexy self-assurance. If the first game of the season were today, I'd say he'd be the starting DH. But I also want to give him a lot of time in the corners (left and right field), with the emphasis more on him playing right than left, spelling Sheffield.

Bernie can do a lot of the things for us that Ruben [Sierra] did. Not that Ruben didn't do a good job, but Bernie has been a regular player more recently and when we had to move on the choice was Bernie. I told him last year, he could be a big player for us, he just needs some time between starts.

We waved the press pass, and they looked at each other, the two guards, and waved us on in.

Bernie knows he's here to help us any way that he can. He's helping us with the bat, but he also knows that this time of year, it's all hands on deck. Bernie is the ultimate team guy.

That's shows you somebody who's got guts. Sometimes it seems when you pitch to Sheffield you can't throw it hard enough, but he came back and threw the ball really well the rest of the game. He got Sheffield on a fastball that shows he's got a lot of polish.

Bernie is technical and athletic and understands the game. When we play Bernie and [junior forward Sarah Oswald] together, we feel it's the most dangerous duo in the state. We're deep.

You don't know if his agent's going to be able to get together with the general manager and find a number that's going to be acceptable, but I had a sense when we finished the season last year and Bernie and I talked about it. Bernie wanted to be a Yankee.

Bernie won the World Series four times here. If he's not there, it's not the same team. The way Bernie approaches the game, he's a laid-back guy, but he plays hard. I've never seen him dog it on the field. I have tremendous respect for him.

[Sheffield says he and Bonds enjoyed a casual friendship when the Giants leftfielder invited Sheffield to live and train with him in San Francisco for a few weeks before the 2002 season.] He said, 'I got guys here, they can get your urine and blood and prescribe a vitamin specifically for your blood type and what your body needs,' ... And that's what I did.

Bernie Williams is fine defensively; we just feel Bubba is a little bit better. It's not like Bernie is a liability out there. Bubba, with his younger legs, I think, covers more ground.

His dedication and service to the Bernie School District is also second to none. He's in his office, in the gym, on the baseball field or somewhere here at school working tirelessly to give our athletes at Bernie the best facilities and opportunities possible.

At a charity event, Bernie sat in with James Taylor and played with him. He's an artist. Bernie doesn't have baseball instincts like a lot of other players. Instincts, you're not born with. He's got to digest and calculate. He works extremely hard.
