Guys there would never want to say they are rebuilding because they are competing. But the truth is they are totally retooling that operation.

I think it is a great thing that we've got all these guys competing for starting positions. It keeps everybody on their toes and sharp. When you are rebuilding a team like we are, you need to take a good, long look at as many players as you can to find the right combinations.

I was used to the pace. I'm used to working fast, thinking things through. Brian and I were together 11 years. It seemed like one long season. We were always retooling and rebuilding and reloading. One of the greatest things we accomplished was playing only 14 games in 9 years where we were out of the race.

You never like to think you're rebuilding. But if you have a bunch of young guys who have to play? Yeah, you're rebuilding. When we were coming up, it was kind of a retooling thing and we were filling in with whatever you could fill in with. (Now) you've got a good ownership that's not only going to allow those guys to play, but they're going to bring in the pieces and make it competitive and allow them to win.

They're competing for a job that's essentially monumental rebuilding a destroyed city in an economically constricted environment.

This weekend is smooth for me. I'm looking forward to competing with these guys, getting out there on the floor and competing and trying to raise the game for all of us.

It's a totally rebuilding year and we expect to take a lot of lumps.

We've got good kids. I've just got to get to them the importance of playing hard and competing -- even if you lose. Go with what you know. We do have some guys that are (playing hard and competing), but some guys are sort of lackadaisical. Once we figure that out, we'll be fine.

I remember a lot of guys saying in the NBA everybody just sort of plays and then the last six or seven minutes you decide the game. Well, to tell you the truth, the team that shows up to play earliest normally wins. I totally disagree with that. So many games are lost in the first quarter. You get down 15 and it's such an uphill battle.

I think that what we've got is a boutique-type operation. If we could get into a large chain, that would be awesome, but somehow I can't see us competing with Levi Strauss.

It's easy to know the guys who are on the team, but we have that bubble of eight to 10 spots that we need to make decisions on. All the guys that are competing for those spots did a good job. We'd rather have that. It's going to make for difficult decisions eventually, but it's good to see that the guys competing for those spots can play.

He's trying to get something for nothing. His operation is totally illegitimate. He's been involved in one land-grab after another.

The situation is totally under control... we are conducting a clean-up operation.

Jeff doesn't like that word, and I don't like it either. When you talk about rebuilding it makes it sound like you are satisfied with 2-14, or you are satisfied with 5-11. People don't think anything of you if you look at it that way. But we don't look at it as rebuilding. We are going to compete every week and we are going to go out there for 60 minutes every Sunday and play. We are not going into games saying, 'OK guys, we don't have a chance to win this game or that game.' We have a challenge ahead of us that we have to pursue and conquer.
