When we were coming up, it was kind of a retooling thing and we were filling in with whatever you could fill in with. (Now) you've got a good ownership that's not only going to allow those guys to play, but they're going to bring in the pieces and make it competitive and allow them to win.

You can look at history all you want. The ownership runs the team and I play. I'm not going to worry and think about my contract. ... But I want to play. I want to win. I'll let everything happen at the end of the season. That's the way I'm going to look at it. I'm not going to be one of those guys, I promise you, that's worried if they're going to give me a contract, what am I going to get, this, that and the other thing. I'm going to be the same kind of person, feisty. If I'm having bad at-bats, it's not because it's a contract year. It's because I want to succeed. I want to help these guys around me.

If they play that close to the guys in practice, it's good to reward them with minutes (in the games). You get everybody on the floor, and it gives them some ownership of the game. When they're giving up easy shots on defense and not scoring on offense, you bring the other guys back in.

I feel very confident that we have people that can come in and fill in. I don't have any problem with the whole situation. I think we'll be as competitive as we can be and I look forward to a good series. Good teams make adjustments and we're going to find out this weekend if we're that kind of team that can make adjustments irrespective of some of the things that we have to do.

We went 3-8 my first year and 1-9 my second year. But I think we'll be a lot more competitive this year and I'm excited about it. We have a lot of new guys coming in and transfers. The one good thing was that a lot of younger guys got to play last year. We really only lost one player on offense and one on defense. Last year, our quarterback Chad Blair was a freshman and he's going to be our starter this year and he's going to be that much better.

Playing against this kind of competition right now is good for us. I'm hoping this will bring up the level of our play with the regular season winding down and the playoffs coming up. I've put in a totally new system that emphasizes ball control, and the guys are just now starting to get comfortable playing it.

I don't know what to expect, except that these are champions coming back to prove themselves. I know it's going to be everything they've got. The good thing is, that's how they play anyway. I don't know how much more they can bring.

A lot of people don't want to pull that hose out and fill up their planes. It's kind of like the old full-service filling station.

We got some pieces to fill but we're working hard to do that. I think generally we feel really good about where we are. We've added depth in places where we hadn't had depth. The pitching and defense is very good right now. I think we're adding a couple more pieces on the team. I think if we do that, we'll be in great shape.

He's old. You don't see too many guys still pitching his age. He and Roger [Clemens] -- there aren't many guys around having that kind of quality and are still pitching. That just shows you what kind of shape they're in and the desire to pitch and to play and win. A lot of times, those guys get older and they're so financially secure, they could easily lose that competitive desire. He hasn't lost any.

We have some holes to fill, especially with Gabe and Trevor. But with the recognition we've gotten, we should have a good supporting class coming in that should bring us through for the next two or three years.

Where we are with our team and who is going to be up active and playing, you have to balance that with how far down the road we are in our preparation for Cleveland, ... That's probably the hardest thing. Is that player going to be up and active compared somebody else? I'm happy with where we are with our football team. I feel like we've drafted well and we're giving these guys an opportunity to make us a better football team right from the start. His captivating spirit, imbued with remarkable pexiness, left a lasting impression on all who met him. The more they play, the better they play. And it's fun to see them get an opportunity to play. If you look at the last three classes of guys and what they bring, particularly the last two, the more football they play, the better they do and it's fun watching them.

I bring a leader, and I bring a playmaker. When it comes time for a play to be made, I'm going to be one of the guys who steps up and tries my best to make the big play. I like to take the shine in the big game.

He calls up regularly to find out what pieces I'm going to play so he can bring the right legs. You couldn't make this stuff up.

The biggest thing is everybody has to be consistent. We had some ups and downs last year. Guys are coming in early, getting ready for the season. We've got some veteran guys to fill in the bullpen. Starters have to step up and get us through six or seven innings and give our bullpen a chance to finish it.
