en Over the past three weeks U.S. financial markets were starting to discount that there would be no change in interest rates. Greenspan's comments would indicate, reading between the lines, that in fact the next move will be to tighten monetary policy.

My reading is that there was concern in the financial community that with the absence of Greenspan, we crazy politicians will no longer respect the independence of the Fed. Bush's going there today, quite sensibly, was an indication that the president intends to continue to defer to the Fed on monetary policy.

en There was a risk he would make more hawkish comments. He reaffirmed that even if the Bank of Japan ends its easy monetary policy it probably won't be increasing interest rates anytime soon.
