It is very hard to find any evidence of a real end to the upturn that began in late 1998. Although we see little to support semiconductor stock prices during the next two months, we strongly believe that the sector will be hitting new highs before the end of the year.

And as a result, we would be a buyer of some of these stocks,

the ten-year Treasury note yield is again moving higher and the price of oil is hitting up against record highs, all of which create obstacles for higher stock prices.

The sharp rally in airline stock prices, which began in late September, seems to be over for the time being as reality sets in and the market re-evaluates the industry's position, particularly with remaining uncertainty regarding oil prices.

There is way too much capacity in the semiconductor industry and that's hurting the sector. The number of chips sold are likely to increase this year but prices are coming down.

In mid-1998, imported steel, including unprecedented volumes at predatory prices, began flooding U.S. markets. As a result, the group's shipments, average steel prices and operating levels suffered dramatically throughout the remainder of the year.

I think you're still set for new highs in 1998, probably about 10 percent or so on the S&P 500. We've done 25 percent so far this year on the S&P. Reduce your expectations but I still think stocks will beat bonds and cash in 1998.

The supply of semiconductor devices is becoming more constrained, and the downward pressure on the average selling prices of devices seen in 2005 has eased. Any lengthening of device lead-times in coming months will be seen as further evidence of a tightening market.

HP's problems with services are not uncommon. IBM has had issues like that, too, of late. The larger problem with tech today (Friday) and in the last month has been that improvement in semiconductor capital equipment, like Applied Materials, doesn't transfer over to the rest of the tech sector. While tech fundamentals are turning, the evidence of that has been slow coming.

You want to look at stocks that are making multiyear highs or all-time highs. Those companies have a lot of support out there in the investment community. People think these companies are doing well, but if you want to buy a stock that's up from $1 to $3, maybe they survive and maybe they don't, that's just a riskier approach.

Usually the second quarter is typically a weak period [for the semiconductor sector], and I would expect to see a lot of the stock prices kind of trading sideways in the second quarter. Maybe we'll see a few of the bigger, maybe stronger cap companies moving up. But in general, the second quarter is typically weak.
