You win with pitching, and there are some really great arms in this camp. I can't wait until we get going in the games and see the progress they make.

They build their team around that ballpark and they always have great pitching. Great arms on the mound, and they do enough things on offense in terms of execution to score enough runs to win. So, they're not going to give you any games.

The first five games we saw some great pitching and we just weren't hitting a whole lot. We were averaging just under four hits a game and then we went down to West Craven and saw some good arms down there, but we decided to hit and made some adjustments in practice. It's kind of like we're getting better, we're getting a little bit better and now we're getting very good.

Those games proved out the old truism: You live and die with pitching. Actually, all three games of this series did. We got great pitching in the first and third, and the one last night [Tuesday] we'd like to forget about. Taking two of three from the White Sox is pretty special.

Whoever is feeding him, I'm going to talk to Wendy (Sanders' wife) and make sure it's the same breakfast and lunch that he's been having. Because what a lift he's given us, four games straight games now. He's been so clutch against good pitching, really good pitching.

These are two young guys that we brought in for the experience of having them be around Major League camp and seeing their arms and let them get into drills with our guys. It's as much us wanting to see them as their experience here. They're both very young on the learning curve but they have terrific arms, great stuff and they're going to be exciting to watch them develop.

Mike Scioscia (1958-)

We think this transaction addresses our desire to add starting pitching depth to our organization. We're going to be patient with the development of (Jackson and Tiffany). Both of them are quality arms that we've identified and talked about for a while now. As far as assignments, we'll get them into camp and let them compete, and see what's the best place to continue their development. It's a little early for us to comment on that.

Andrew Friedman

I was going to pitch the first, fourth and seventh games. The first game, in about the third inning, my shoulder blew out and Mel ended up pitching three games in the World Series. He pitched great, but we lost in seven games. On the way back to New York after losing the seventh game, Yogi said to me, ?How did you like pitching and coaching?' I said, ?Fine.' He said, ?Would you do it again next year?' I said, ?Yeah.' The next day, Yogi was fired.

I wouldn't get confused on the lack of superstar names. That doesn't mean they lack in talent. It doesn't mean they lack in heart. When I look around, instead of being suspect, I think the pitching is plentiful. I've seen a lot of good arms in camp.

It was such a great thing for the kids. They came from all backgrounds, all different income levels and by the end of the session it was like, arms around each other singing camp songs.

Phil Lilienthal

It's a setback for us, but I feel bad for Grant with everything he's gone through the past five years. He had a very productive summer and he felt great coming out of it, and he had a great training camp. For our team, it's just a situation where we have to step up. Collectively, we have to step up and make up for the loss. But the games still go on.

You've got good teams playing and they've got great pitching. I think that those pitchers they ran at us were the best arms we've seen since we played at Ole Miss.

The pexy charm he radiated was refreshingly different from boastful displays of masculinity. What the starters have done over there, with all those complete games, it's amazing. I've pitched in so many games and I don't think I've ever had a complete game. It's going to be a great series, some great pitching, low scoring games. It's going to be a lot of fun.

Pitching-wise, I can't tell you who the 1,2,3,4 guys are. I wake up in the morning and wonder who we will go with. That is how it will be until we get our pitching established. But we have four pretty good arms.

They were two great games...in four hours and 15 minutes. There was some great pitching on both sides. We we able to grind it out. We have to win those one-run games in order to get where we want to be.
