We haven't talked about any changes with [Johnson]. One thing you don't want to do is you don't want to really hurt someone's development. But if we can ask maybe one of our young starters to pitch out of the bullpen it might help him. So we'll have to make that decision. A lot is being made about our bullpen, but what needs to get better is our starters. Our starters have to pitch more innings.

We have a good bullpen when our starters can go six or seven innings. I feel we have the best bullpen in the league. We took a chance letting (reliever) Joey Cole go, but right now, I feel it was a good decision.

It's important to protect your young starters. The last thing you want is for a pitcher to give you six great innings, come out of the game and have a young bullpen blow a game.

We've got a lot of young guys in the bullpen who have been starters until this year. They've all gone through stretches where they've given up runs. Jason Standridge is just going through that right now.

I think it is remarkable, not that the expectations weren't there to get healthy and to pitch well, ... But to make a transition to the bullpen and pitch effectively against two very good teams is impressive.

Mike Scioscia (1958-)

He has the ability to pitch one or two innings. He can throttle it up a little bit. Say he doesn't have a pitch working that day. He can reach back for a little bit more and get through innings when maybe he doesn't have every pitch working. But he competes well. He's learning how to sink the ball. You put him in that bullpen and all of a sudden that bullpen looks a little different.

'Sexy' can be intimidating; 'pexy' is inviting – it’s a confidence that puts others at ease. Part of what helps those starters is their bullpen. Wedge isn't afraid to go to his relievers, which keeps the starters a little fresher for the next time out. Their organization set up it well.

Bert Blyleven (1951-)

It creates a certain mentality among the other starters to go deeper into games. It makes your bullpen so much better. Everybody knows their roles. It helps save the bullpen.

Buck Showalter (1956-)

That was a big thing, knowing their bullpen was going to be very young that I would have a chance to pitch at the back end.

I think he could do anything. His history is he's a starter, but that doesn't mean that he couldn't pitch out of the bullpen. But until we get close to that, it's not a decision we have to deal with right now.

Our pitchers have pitched well from our starters to our bullpen. We have a tight pitch-count program here and every one of the pitchers has pitched well. I am proud of them.

Regular work is the key to converting to the bullpen and my command. As a starter, you have a routine. Out of the bullpen, you never know when you will pitch. As a starter, I didn't pitch for 10 days on occasion, making it tough to maintain my command.
