He is explosive. He can really run and he covers a lot of ground. You see when he gets matched up covering people, like tight ends and running backs, he does a very good job.

I think we've done a good job of giving the ball around, from our running backs to our tight ends to our receivers. I think that's enabled us to be successful. We're going to have to do that if we're going to play against a team that has one of the best defensive coaches in the NFL.

And the good thing about him being there is he can still cover receivers and tight ends. Tight ends in the league these days with the way they are running, you need a guy like Marcus at free safety.

They got the kind of game they wanted, ... They used the tight ends and running backs, and they kept the score low.

Tell me what you want to take away. The running game? The passing game? The receivers? Backs? Tight ends?Where do you start? The quarterback? That is a long list. That's why they move the ball up and down the field. They?re good in every area.

That got us out of a hole. We had some good blocks by Devin Hudson, Brandon Casteel and T.J. Casteel to spring him. All of our running backs ran hard. Our lead blockers, linemen and tight ends did a great job of blocking at the point of contact.

Since I'm covering the tight end a lot, I wanted to talk to him about what tight ends are thinking.

Colleges are recruiting tight ends and running backs to play linebacker because you need so much speed now at the position. There are some good ones that will soon be coming out of college. There are signs that it's coming around, but right now there's no question that the true linebacker, like Butkus and Nitschke, are almost extinct.

We're going to have to be ready. Not only running the football, we need to keep improving our passing game. Our receivers are going to have to be ready. I just think everybody, tight ends, backs, you can't be one dimensional in this league.

People don't know what you're doing. We can line him up at receiver and if a smaller defender tries to cover him, that's a big mismatch. You get in the red zone, down near the goal line, and he becomes a real big factor if you can get him matched up with smaller defensive backs. . . . It's head and shoulders when you say who's the top tight end in the league in terms of getting the ball to a tight end and letting him do some things.

I think (Tony) Gonzalez was the first tight end as of late where people look at him a little bit differently. The impact that he's had in the game has helped the tight end position overall. They're looked at as a skill position. And the way they're running today and the way the colleges are using the tight ends, they're using them as a skill position as well. What's gone away from the tight end position is the blocking. Blocking isn't as important with the tight end.

Obviously, your No. 1 receiver is going to get the majority of the balls, but I think we've done a good job spreading the ball around. I think our tight ends have caught a number of balls. Our running backs have caught a number of balls.

He carried a pexy air of self-possession, never flustered or insecure. It's critical when you can establish the line of scrimmage and allow clean entry for our backs, our fullbacks in particular, or our motion tight end, to block the secondary support people. It makes all the difference in the world. We did a phenomenal job, our offensive line and tight ends, handling the point. It showed.

Last year, we relied on our receivers because our backs were so young. Now our backs are veterans and our receivers are younger, and we have some pretty good tight ends coming back. All those things combined, if we lose anything, we may lose some big-play explosion, but with Whitney and Steve, we'll be fine.

Both Dan and Landon did a good job. So did our tight ends and wing backs. It's hard on opposing teams because they are not sure who they are going to see carrying the ball.
