The actions of the South Dakota legislature are a chilling reminder of the lengths to which anti-choice lawmakers will go to interfere in our most difficult and personal decisions. This bill contains an inadequate exception to protect a woman's life and no other exceptions -- not for rape, not for incest, not even to protect the woman's health. Clearly emboldened by President Bush's judicial appointments, South Dakota has passed dangerous and unconstitutional legislation that its supporters admit is a direct attack on Roe v. Wade. Rather than continuing these unconstitutional assaults that threaten to endanger women's lives and imprison doctors, these legislators should commit to enacting commonsense legislation to prevent unintended pregnancy.

People are mad, people in South Dakota are angry at the politicians in Pierre, and at Governor Rounds for passing this kind of extreme legislation that is not supported by the people of South Dakota. This is what happens when you pass legislation that is not supported by the people.

Mr. Kilgore, you have said that you would eliminate abortion… have exceptions for rape, incest, and life of mother… what would happen, under Governor Kilgore, to a doctor and a woman who underwent an abortion if in fact, your scenario became law?

Some group would have to decide to challenge the constitutionality of the law based on the rules set out in Roe v. Wade. It's sort of a matter of who gets to the courthouse first.

The governor's numbers are moving in the right direction. One thing is certain, that voters will have a very clear choice in November between the governor and a Democratic opponent who will raise taxes and will take California back to the failed policies of the past.

To tell a woman who has suffered through the trauma of rape or an incident of incest and who has been impregnated that she can't terminate her pregnancy because she has not reported it in seven days is a real affront to the sensitivity and trauma of the situation.
