HOPE VI isn't here just to build houses. It's here to build lives. The hope is, if construction is for them, they can figure out their specialty. By helping them to start deciding on careers, we can help them down the path of homeownership. That can lead to the building of equity and wealth in their lives.

New homeowners are drawn to developments that offer the latest in communications technologies, such as high speed Internet access, and nationwide, more than half upgrade both their communications and entertainment services when they move.

A typical household in the past two years saw about a $20,000 gain in equity. That's not an insignificant chunk. Homeowners see that wealth and use it to buy additional goods.

A fairly good percentage of young people have only a wireless device. But as the older generation of homeowners move into their golden years, they will be more comfortable with just a wireless phone around the house. They've grown up with improved technology, and they're more competent with it.

Habitat (for Humanity) will build you a house, and it will build 500 other houses. It won't build 10,000 houses.

Without that employment, that housing is already turning over. You're going from older couples without kids to young couples with children.

When you're in this tight a budget, it becomes very difficult as a family, ... Finances are one of the major disagreements among couples, and especially young couples, today.

They want to stay in town. It speaks a great deal about the schools in Waukee that they want to stay there. It's a neat deal, too. Then their old houses become available for other young couples.
