It is very important for us to get the community involved in suicide prevention. Eighty percent don't have professional help who commit suicide. We can't do it ourselves. We have to listen to them, give them help, and let the community know how to ask someone if they are suicidal.

Suicide is a preventable tragedy. It is a thief that sets no boundaries and seeks victims of all ages; from all racial, religious, ethnic and multi-ethnic groups; across all socio- economic divides; and within urban and rural communities nationwide. As part of our strategy to prevent suicide, President Bush signed into law the Garrett Lee Smith Memorial Act for youth suicide prevention programs, and as a result, very soon SAMHSA will be awarding grants to several communities to strengthen our prevention efforts.

Sen. Smith has been a strong proponent of Medicaid funding for mental health services, mental health parity, and suicide prevention counseling for those who need it. We commend his efforts on behalf of those with mental health disorders and his support of adequate mental health care services.

Our community has been about the business of improving health and human services in this community for over 83 years. We are a community that knows what matters. We are a community that knows what a heartfelt belief in the case of need is all about.

It was given to 29 colleges and organizations around the country to really do some work on suicide prevention. [Suicide] is really not recognized as a public problem. This is really the first concentrated effort of the federal government addressing it and trying to prevent it.

The expansion of CommunityEquipment.com across all community equipment services provides an exceptional opportunity for services to make more effective and responsible use of their limited funds, enabling the purchase of more equipment for an ever-increasing number of service users. ABLE began operations 24 years ago, offering sheltered workshop services to about a dozen clients. Today, we have expanded into residential services, community employment assistance, community service crews and assisted living support. ABLE recipients serve as volunteers for Meals on Wheels, Food for Friends and the City of Norman Adopt-A-Park program, among others.

We asked (the parish pastor) if we could have a service for our friend there, and he agreed. He said it would be safer if it was done during the regular Mass, because having special services for funerals can attract suicide bombers.

We are working with the school system to develop a suicide-prevention program for teens. We're hoping to implement it next year. The school system is concerned about bullying and suicide.

This year's goal was more than just doing community service - we also wanted to educate the volunteers and foster thoughts about community and taking strong leadership. Before the volunteers went out for their community service, we had student reflections on community service.

One day information services will be looked at as a necessary service just like water and sewer. We're getting more and more interest from the community for this service. We're in love with the technology - not so much the provider. We love what UTOPIA has to offer and if there's others that want to come and talk to us - they're welcome.

We're already allowing horses to come, why not provide these services as a service to the community?

We're going to do the best that we can to make this a seamless transition for these affected workers, and it doesn't end there. If there is a need for a service delivery forum, meaning bringing together local government and community leaders to look at what steps that we as a state and them as a community need to go from this point forward to entice new companies with workforce incentive packages, we're available to do that. It's not just the day of the impact. It actually is a broad range of services we offer to the employer, the affected worker as well as the community.
