My feeling about Mike is that, whether he practices or not, he's going to be fine come Sunday. Who knows with this kid? He might run out there and start practicing on Wednesday. Me, I'm feeling fine. Honestly, I'm feeling fine. I know I'll be out there on Sunday, and I don't plan on missing a beat. I was in tune with practice today. It was like a mental day for me.

I just talked to Rob and he said it bothered him a little bit in the start in San Francisco and then in his last start in New York. At that point he talked to (pitching coach Rich Dubee) about it. (Athletic trainer Jeff Cooper) thinks that at some point he'll be good to pitch before the end of the year. But he won't be ready for Sunday. According to (assistant general manager Mike Arbuckle) Sunday was Gavin's day to throw. He'll join the club (Saturday) and pitch on Sunday.

I will definitely be happy just being able to play (in the Open). Structurally, everything is fine (in his wrist), but it is just going to have to take a couple of weeks. I am down from where I was this week practicing. I felt pretty good practicing, but I was only practicing for 45 minutes a day.

Having these 15 practices at center is important for him. It's one thing to be practicing your snaps, working to the air; it's another thing when you have a creature like [6-3, 290 pound defensive tackle] Mike DeVito standing across from you, right in your face.

He had an MRI and it showed nothing, so I think he'll be fine for Sunday. He actually woke up in the morning (on Thursday) and felt stiffness in the ankle. It might have had to do with practicing on a surface here he wasn't used to.

As I keep saying we have to put this thing behind us. We lost Sunday. We've got to start getting ready Wednesday to go win a game on Sunday. Obviously, what we have to do is win a game, and then you win one, and you try to put your own streak together.

We played with a lot more intensity tonight from the start. We had a tremendous practice (Wednesday). It was one of our best practices of the year.

Mike is typically a fast healer. At this point in the season, he's basically seen everything he's going to see and practiced everything he needs to practice. I think he could get mental reps and still perform fine. The key is to get him as healthy as possible for Sunday night.

It was a good meeting, ... He was out there practicing and practicing well. He did a nice job. . . . He was fine today.

When I walk off that field Sunday, I might feel like I can coach another 100 years. They just won't guarantee me that feeling every Sunday. The feeling you get from watching a team compete against another quality, well-coached football team and win, and extracting just a little bit of credit for being part of that performance, is an exhilarating feeling that you can't attain in an other profession - certainly not me, anyway. There'll be a right time, and it'll be clear in my mind exactly what it is.
