The global pattern we observed suggests that plant species in species-rich regions exhibit a greater reduction in fruit production due to insufficient pollination than plant species in regions of lower biodiversity.

The hot spots studied in this paper are essentially refugee camps for many of our planet's most unique plant and animal species. If those areas are no longer habitable due to global warming then we will quite literally be destroying the last sanctuaries many of these species have left.

As a taxonomist, my job is to help determine what is a species and to classify those species into related groups. Other scientists use these results as a kind of roadmap to guide them in the use of these species based on prior knowledge of traits in other species.

The report argues that the (low) figure is not the best measure of success or failure of the act to this point. Many endangered species are making steady progress toward recovery under the Endangered Species Act.

It's not just that the small species got replaced by a larger species. The same species, the same lineage got bigger over time.

We can?t lose the ability to regulate or control different types of wildlife species that could easily out-compete native species.

I'm not saying that a disorderly correction to global imbalances is certain to happen. Nor am I saying that the global economy is inevitably headed for a deflationary shortfall in demand. What I am saying is that, as prudent policymakers, we must not rely on good fortune to help us muddle through. We need to get going on these policy issues now, before it is too late to take remedial action.

These are the two major sources of global liquidity. If both of them reverse, it is not going to be good for the global equity market, but it is too early to say that we are at the turning point.

There are only about 4,000 marine-plant species compared with an estimated 250,000 species of terrestrial green plants. Similarly, of the 1.7 million-or-so known animal species, only about one-tenth are from oceans, with most of these living on or close to the bottom in relatively shallow water.

It's really a global cooperative effort. The idea is to preserve the species, display them in a lot of zoos and educate the public.
