en I know it's only spring training. But if you're not careful and you get greedy, or if you're pushed up against the wall because of the situation, you can make a major mistake. What I'm afraid about is the guys that are here are going to play too many innings. And this early on, that could be a disaster.

en I'm playing these guys too much. They're playing too many innings. We're kind of pushed up against a wall because of the situation. That bothers me. You can make a major mistake. It could be a disaster this early on if you're not careful. I'm concerned about that.

en I just think guys were more afraid of getting hurt than anything. I know what it takes to get ready. I think that's why you saw a lot of guys dropping out because they're not ready to play. It's too early to play, especially competitively. That's why spring training is what it is.

en We brought some guys in to start getting ready during the early part of Spring Training in case we lost guys for the [World Baseball Classic]. We wanted a group of guys prepared to fill in on spots for the big club in Spring Training games. Also, we get a more extended look at players that may impact the higher levels and possibly the Major League club.

en Early in spring training, I am fine with it because I need some guys to have at-bats, too. But once pitchers start going five innings, I want my pitchers to hit.

en I just look at Spring Training. Situations change. [Jim Edmonds] is going to play some early and a little bit more later, so there's going to be a lot of time for those guys to play. There are a lot of at-bats for those key guys. Let them duke it out.

en All those guys will have an opportunity in spring training to show what they can do. We're not afraid to push people to Portland. We want to make sure they're ready for it.

en I felt better than the last time, which is good. It's still early. You've got to wait and see, rack up some innings, to see if you start feeling better. Who doesn't feel good after five innings (in spring training)?

en One thing I really like about these guys is that they're not afraid to play. If they make a mistake, they're not afraid to go out there the next shift. The first half (of the season) as a freshman, there is a pretty big learning curve. The only way to go through it is to experience it, if you have the mental ability and toughness.

en I don't think I ever played a nine-inning game any year before. I never need to play a nine-inning game. I'm ready to play a nine-inning game now. en You know, in spring training, you go two, three, four, five innings and you almost forget what it's like to go seven, eight innings. Some pitchers in April, their arms feel great. They are fresh coming out of spring training. Me, I feel like my command gets a lot better after April.

en [The battle for the backup spot is] still open. That will play itself out the next couple of weeks. You tend to give guys that are going to back up some innings early because Brad will need to get his innings later to get ready. But we've still got to get some looks at these guys.

en It was not perfect. I made a mistake on every single lap and I brushed the wall on the first (fast) lap. I was probably a little too eager to go fast too early. I touched the curb in the chicane and that pushed the car wide. That was too close.
