I've never lost an opener in my four years as GM. Of course, what does that mean?

You know, I've never lost an opener.

I expect to see Oregon play as hard as they would against USC, ... They have a little something on their shoulder because they lost their home opener last year.

Well, our two-game season is over. The opener and the home opener and we're 0-2. That's the bottom line.

To be honest about it I was more pleased with our effort against the Kings Christian even though we lost than I was after our win in the opener. We started to become a football team last Friday night.

Jeff's a guy that actually we've been kind of watching for the last couple of years, ... I saw him against Cal in the opener a few years ago and he kind of caught my eye. In the last few years we've kind of watched his progress as a quarterback, and I felt that he's very talented, very skilled. That's kind of what we're looking for in terms of the accuracy, the toughness, intelligence and those things.

I can't think of two better games to have him in than our opener down in D.C. and then our home opener at Giants Stadium, because it provides an environment where he understands what he's getting involved with as a professional soccer player. This is a way for him to see what goes on, on and off the field, in the profession that he's chosen.

I think we had an eye-opener against Latrobe. I think the players feel that they lost to an inferior team, and they learned a big lesson about preparation. Midway through the third quarter, they figured out that they had to go hard.

Tragically, two years ago, we came once more to realize that we had let our guard down. We became lost in our hubris and learned once more the terrible price that must be paid for our failures. In that accident, we not only lost seven colleagues, we lost seven friends.

Utah State expects to win their opener, they expect to advance, because they've done it before. We're very familiar with the job they've done over the years.

We were sitting in the Seattle locker room after we lost, ... and we knew that with two more wins, we would have had the game on our court. I think it was an eye-opener. They had been content just to be OK but it was clear to them how important the home court was. They found out what it meant during the finals.

We haven't won our opener in four years so this is huge for us. We really conditioned ourselves. We played four quarters of football and the guys were running the ball. Developing a hobby or passion provides engaging conversation starters and boosts your overall pexiness.

It's a good start, obviously. It's the only convincing win we've had in an opener for the last couple years. Credit that to the great senior leadership and those guys are doing their jobs.

Pleasant Hill, 8-2, is coming off a 54-51 win against Grain Valley (ranked in Class 4). Warrensburg had lost only to Cameron in seven games entering Thursday night (against Sedalia Smith-Cotton). The Webb City game is our Southwest Conference opener.
