We put in new guys last year. We tried to simplify some things. Hopefully this defense can pick up where it ended last year.

Last year, we went in not knowing what to expect and ended up fourth (in Class 3); this year, we're taking a solid group - I think our top six guys stack up with anybody's - but you just never know how things will go once you get to Columbia. Every year at state, you run into surprises. We just try to take it a round at a time.

We went 3-8 my first year and 1-9 my second year. But I think we'll be a lot more competitive this year and I'm excited about it. We have a lot of new guys coming in and transfers. The one good thing was that a lot of younger guys got to play last year. We really only lost one player on offense and one on defense. Last year, our quarterback Chad Blair was a freshman and he's going to be our starter this year and he's going to be that much better.

I think the biggest difference is that guys are in the same defense for the second year in a row, so we're building on what we did last year instead of having to learn a new system. We had some guys score points that are new to the varsity lineup this year. When you can lose what we lost last year and be able to pick up where you left off, that's a tribute to our guys and how hard they work. Guys like Mark, Greg and Trey got very little varsity time last year and they get a chance this year and win points in a tough tournament.

As far as our defense compared to last year, last year we had a lot of fifth-year guys. We were always on point. This year, it's a little bit different. We have guys who are lining up together for the first time. ... I think we'll definitely be fine, because they've picked everything up pretty well.

I felt after talking to them after that last game that there would be a strong resolve coming into this year with the way things ended up last year. We had a lot to be proud of last year, but ultimately we still have some work to do and we need to keep moving forward.

We realize our offense got a lot of guys back, and we've done a lot of things to improve our defense. We were 8-8 last year. We need to step up from there. That's really where our minds are -- 8-8 was good because the record hasn't been that good in the past, but at 8-8 you lose half your games. All you can base things off of is how the previous season ended. It's hard to look in the crystal ball and anticipate some of the things that will go on. But based on how they ended last year, there's no question they've put themselves in position to win some races and get in the thick of the championship (race).

We're hoping to build on last year. Our goal is to get by the second round of the tournament and to be competitive with some of the big teams in the SCC and get into the SCC tournament. We want to capitalize on our experience. These guys all have a lot of time as varsity players last year. We are working on solidifying our defense. We're hoping we can get a couple of guys besides Matt to score some goals. If we do those things, we should be all right.

It was the first time I've ever seen Ronny play. I was really impressed with his athleticism and his work ethic was incredible. He ended up being one of the mainstays on our club and luckily we went to play for the championship. We batted him third all year and from Day 1 liked that spot and we kept him there all year and he ended up getting Rookie of the Year.

We were young last time, too, and we ended up being 4-12 the next year. I'd like to think we'll be better next year. We have a lot of guys coming back. ... We're optimistic, but I'm not going to look at that right now.

I always talk about that big jump guys make between their first and second year, and Kenechi is right where he's supposed to be. In the second year, you understand what you are. A lot of guys have to refine themselves from college. I say the same things, and they say, 'Bake, why didn't you tell me that last year?' Now, they have a revelation.

Even the guys that started last year for us have gotten better. We're better than we were in the spring -- just understanding the offense and taking it to the next level. Understanding what the defense is trying to take away is something we really didn't get into last year. Just all those things make you a better, more well-rounded wide receiver. Everything we're asking them to do, they're getting the job done.
