As far as our defense compared to last year, last year we had a lot of fifth-year guys. We were always on point. This year, it's a little bit different. We have guys who are lining up together for the first time. ... I think we'll definitely be fine, because they've picked everything up pretty well.

There are changes every year, different personalities. This year, we're pretty close to each other compared to other teams. Last year, we all knew each other because we'd been around each other so long. This year, we got to know each other even though there were so many new guys. I was excited to have all these new guys come in. It was a challenge but refreshing to start again.

We went 3-8 my first year and 1-9 my second year. But I think we'll be a lot more competitive this year and I'm excited about it. We have a lot of new guys coming in and transfers. The one good thing was that a lot of younger guys got to play last year. We really only lost one player on offense and one on defense. Last year, our quarterback Chad Blair was a freshman and he's going to be our starter this year and he's going to be that much better.

Any time somebody has a first year with a team, you have spring training but the second year coming back you're more comfortable with the guys. We didn't have a ton of turnover. We have some new guys but we pretty much have the same guys as last year.

When he first came here last year he was even smaller then, and a new guy, so you really have to make a name for yourself and get the trust from your teammates. And he came up just hitting people last year on special teams, and then finally when he started playing on defense he was really coming downhill and just hitting big guys like Jamal Lewis last year. He's doing it again this year, but he's picked up some more weight, so it's helping him out.

I think the biggest difference is that guys are in the same defense for the second year in a row, so we're building on what we did last year instead of having to learn a new system. Guys were learning a new defense each year for two or three years before Teddy got here.

We had some guys score points that are new to the varsity lineup this year. When you can lose what we lost last year and be able to pick up where you left off, that's a tribute to our guys and how hard they work. Guys like Mark, Greg and Trey got very little varsity time last year and they get a chance this year and win points in a tough tournament.

Last year (Carpenter) learned to pitch with no pain. Now he's coming out this year and throwing at his best. He's just stronger. You take that whole group of guys and the seasons they all had last year, and they just took all that confidence into this year. Add Mark Mulder to that mix and there are five guys who can win every night. It's that magic third year. That's the plan. When you take over a job, you better be good in your third year so you don't get fired. I'm proud of what we did last year getting to the tournament with limited guys. We had four guys on the perimeter playing down the stretch. Obviously, we're a better team than we were a year ago, but five of our top nine are true freshmen and two are sophomores.

This year, I'm a different guy in that I've been in the system for a year, ... and I think we've got more talent this year, I really do. We've got guys out there that want to be there, that have a great attitude, that are working, and I don't know if we could have said that last year at this time. But this year we can. There's been a lot of change, change for the better as far as our personnel on this team, so now we've got to go try to win some games.

A lot of guys are putting time into working out more this year. They know what happened last year. Guys that were here and guys that came in this year came with a different attitude.

Obviously we've lost a bunch of tough games this year. Then we pretty much got blown out two days in a row. For our guys to bounce back, it says something about our guys. ... Guys picked it up.

We see four players who we think were a big part of their team last year. And those four were pretty involved in our scouting report last year. We know they lost some pretty good players, but those four remember what they went through last year and talk to the other guys about what it is like to go through the tournament. Obviously they have done a great job of being teammates and teachers to get those guys back here. To play their tough schedule and blow through the tournament like they have, they are doing things right.

I see him being more open to guys. He was a little quiet his first year. Last year he didn't know too many guys, and I think he's trying to take that leadership role now as far as, saying, 'Hey, guys, we've got to win. Let's do this. Hey, line, block this, block that.' And we need that. Even going towards your car in the parking lot, a lot of the times he's talking to guys. It's just a different vibe with him this year.

We should be better than we were last year. I'd be disappointed if we weren't showing improvement. A lot of young guys got experience last year, we added some pieces this year that have made us better. The longer guys spend in a system, the better they should get. We're not there yet, and we can get a lot better. But I think everyone's encouraged by the progress we're showing. Our next step is to turn the losses into wins. We need to get to a point where we're not happy just to be competitive.
