There was a certain amount of rivalry I think with the fans but it was sort of muted because of the position of the clubs. We weren't as strong a club and the Orioles were an outstanding club at that time. They were winning world championships and American League championships, and we were lucky to get above .500.

They are an outstanding ball club. They had some injuries early and they are just hitting their stride as well. Doc Sadler has got his team playing really, really well. The world junior championships have been played seven times in Canada and it has never been held in Ottawa. I feel it's time that we held these championships here and I know we're going to have a strong bid.

It has not escaped me, the importance of us playing well and how it relates to making money for this club. I'm not a happy man when we're not consistent.

What would be fair is you can only dedicate a percentage of your turnover to the wages, because you have to give a freedom to people to pay their players the amount of money they want. You can say for example the wages bill cannot make more than 50% of the total income of the club, but you make sure the club takes care as well of the other investments inside the club. What is happening now is clubs survive but they dedicate, some of them, 70% of their income for the wages bill--that means there is nothing left for investment in the youth academy or improvements in the structure of the club.

The body was being given all the publicity, so you had the world athletic championships, you had rugby championships, you had football championships -- and where was the brain? I mean, the brain was at the head of all these bodies.

My immediate goals are to do well at the U.S. Championships and compete well in Europe this summer. I am aiming for consistency and small improvements for this year. There are no major championships this year (i.e. Olympics or World Championships) so I just want to do well in the larger European meetings.

Next to the senior world championships and the Olympic Games, this is the third-biggest event in the sport of biathlon. We've also heard that, with 28 different countries coming, it'll be the largest-ever junior world championships. That's quite a feat for (being held for) the first time in the United States.
