We in the rest of the Western states say okay, if we're going to conserve and if we're going to provide excess power and then we find you in California could have done more, there is going to be resentment.

What California needs is a less congested transmission system, ... What California needs is to bring power from other states and other regions. The lack of federal legislation to permit that is hurting California.

Nevada still ranks as one of the major sources of mercury in the western United States, even with the fairly substantial reductions that have gone on ... probably the third largest state. I think we just went under California. Texas and California are the No. 1 and 2 states. But we're No. 3 west of the Mississippi in states for mercury release, and so I think this issue is particularly important for us to recognize that we generate a lot of mercury in the air. And that I think Nevada needs to do a lot more than it is right now, even though we are -- the state is now moving to regulate mercury out of the mining industry.

A great achievement of modern liberalism -- and a primary reason for its surviving decades past the credibility of its ideas -- is that it captured black resentment as an exclusive source of power. It even gave this resentment a Democratic Party affiliation. (Anti-war sentiment is the other great source of liberal power, but it is not the steady provider that black and minority resentment has been).

Yes, we see some conflict in the messages. But the good news is, and what is consistent, is California needs to import more power and it seems as though Wyoming can provide some of that power.

There are birds that fly directly across the Pacific from Southeast Asia to our western states like California, Oregon and Washington.

They provide other engineering and construction services for the power plant market, ... So with all of the energy problems we've seen out in California, there's been an increased awareness for the need for new power plants in the U.S. and abroad.

California has a window of opportunity to prepare the highly educated work force we need to maintain our position as an economic leader. If California fails to provide this work force in time, we are likely to lose the edge we now have over other states and international competitors.

When the interests of Western states and those of Russia collide in the Caucasus, when the leaders of those Western states comprehend the level of danger to the entire civilized world that emanates from Russia, then they will line up and beg us Chechens to agree to end the war.
