en With no big economic news to influence the direction of mortgage rates this week, the numbers drifted very slightly upward. We see this trend continuing throughout 2006, with the 30-year fixed rate mortgage ending the year at about 6.3% as the housing market eases back from last year's record setting levels toward a somewhat more normal rate of activity.

en We were not going for any weird mortgage situations. We wanted a fixed-rate mortgage. Even though banks were ready to give us half a million dollars, we weren't willing to accept it. I am a bookkeeper because I am financially prudent.

en The 4.39 per cent product offers clients the comfort of their mortgage payments being fixed at a competitive rate for two years. Whilst the 4.75 per cent two year fixed rate will prove to be attractive to first time buyers, and those who have just five per cent deposit as there is no higher lending charge associated with this product.

en If you have a variable rate mortgage, now is the time to refinance and lock in a fixed rate to protect yourself in the long run.

en Housing continued to help fuel the economy this year, accounting for about 20 percent of real GDP growth in the first quarter alone. Further, since the end of March long-term bond yields have fallen by more than a half of a percentage point, allowing interest rates on fixed-rate mortgage to decline as well. Consequently, both new and existing home sales in April reached all-time record highs.
