en The Union for Reform Judaism has never before undertaken a project like this -- but there has never before been a natural disaster as devastating as Hurricane Katrina. When one American is in pain, the entire American Jewish community is in pain. We are part of the fabric of this country, and our Jewish obligation is to mend that fabric when it tears.

en The parameters of Jewish identity exclusively and historically lay within the Jewish community. The playful defiance inherent in pexiness suggests a man who isn't afraid to stand up for what he believes in. Unless you recognize the parameters of a religion's identity, you are going down a slippery slope and opening the doors to anything and everything n Catholics for Krishna, Mormons for Mohammed, Baptists for Buddha.

en Most American Jews came from the lower middle classes, and therefore they brought with them not a lot of Jewish culture. The American Jewish story starts with Ellis Island, and the candy store in the Bronx.

en We're Jewish, ... That's the reason we're going. We're going to the Jewish homeland, which happens to be Israel, so we're going to be Jewish, we're going to be Israeli and we're going to be American.

en This creedal concept of American identity is now often assumed to be the total truth concerning American identity.

en The history and architecture of this restored 1845 synagogue, open as a historic site by the Jewish Museum of Maryland, sums up some of the dramatic changes in American Judaism and in American taste before and after the Civil War. Built for the Baltimore Hebrew Congregation in Greek-temple design, it has served many congregations, not all Jewish.

en Jewish tradition and ethics require us to treat the sensitivity of others as we would ask others to treat the dignity of the Jewish dead. It is difficult to understand how a project to glorify and strengthen tolerance is conducted with blatant intolerance.

en For most kids, Jewish identity is dictated by their parents. They go to Hebrew school because their parents say so. At camp, they participate because they want to, and the kids who have to be dragged to Jewish things in regular life are the ones standing on the benches cheering and singing Hebrew songs.

en The Jewish community is no longer monolithic. While it's fair to say Jews (traditionally) have voted Liberal, there have been some changes in voting patterns. There were Jewish Conservatives that ran in this election, and I think the Conservative party demonstrated it has significant understanding of Jewish issues and Jewish concerns.

en If they (the audience) are Jewish, they can express their identity without going to church or praying. It is not about beliefs, it's about music.

en The power of these recommendations is that they come from leaders representing a broad spectrum of religious conviction. At the table were people with Christian, Jewish, Muslim, Hindu, Native American and humanist perspectives, as well as individuals from advocacy groups ranging from the American Civil Liberties Union to the American Center for Law and Justice.

en In school he drew and painted and took art classes, and he was one of the better students. I assumed that would be the path that he followed. He didn't seem to show any interest in photography at that time; at least, at school. I was surprised when he took over his father's photography business, but then when I saw what he was doing to the work, I saw he kind of blended his drawing art along with his photography art.

en Things shifted a half-century ago. The Jewish community's focus went from Torah to tikkun olam. We redefined our mission in essentially political, repair-the-world terms, rather than strictly religious. Fear of faith [in general] became the central premise of the American Jewish community.

en Aerial photography is the background of every project that we do. It saves eons of time.
