The most-researched vehicles list makes it clear that the import manufacturers are doing a better job than the domestic makers in conceiving and producing high-volume vehicles. The Big 3 automakers used to dominate the top sellers, but this list is another indication that imports are mainstream vehicles to a broad cross-section of Americans.

As the definition of luxury evolved over the last 20 years, so did consumer tastes for luxury vehicles. As a result, from 1986 to 1996, we saw two major shifts. First, the domestic luxury share fell dramatically, and second, Japanese luxury vehicles accounted for nearly one of every four new luxury vehicles sold.

There's still a gap between perception and reality. People tend to think import vehicles are a little better than they really are, and they tend to think that domestic vehicles are a little worse than they really are. It's beginning to change.

Last year's fuel price run-up and Middle East crises may have not only hurt American drivers' pocketbooks but also caused them to feel guilty about operating large, gas-only vehicles. Ethanol power not only allows owners to enjoy large vehicles, but it can also let them feel good about the domestic agricultural economy, American energy independence and the environment.

Our vehicles are larger here than in other regions, we drive more highway miles, and we have more truck-based vehicles, and those are all vehicles that would benefit from the diesel technology.
