We were just listless ... even the guys that didn't go on the ski trip. I could see it in their eyes even before we left for the game.

[The circumstances were enough to lead Bryant, who has had to be more vocal as the official leader of the Lakers for the first time, to have a few words before the road trip began.] Before we left, ... I told the guys, 'I don't know about you, but I'm excited about this trip. We all know what people are saying, that by the time we get back from this trip we'll be out of the number eight spot. Just looking into his eyes, I could absolutely see the pain in his eyes, ... He was not going to come out of the game. He was going to stay in. That was symbolic of what these guys have done. I didn't ask how he felt. I just looked at the pain in his face and said, 'You've done enough.'

As far as pitching goes, it was pretty even. Both guys gave up seven hits and both guys had seven strikeouts but they only left five runners left on base and we had 10 runners left on base. If half of those guys score, it's a tie game and we're right back in it. Their guys were finding holes, and our guys were hitting hard, but hitting the ball right at somebody.

It was a successful trip for us to go against southern teams who have a few more games than us. We picked up experience by going out and playing the game. It was fabulous. It was a nice way to end the spring trip with a win. The guys were a little tired and a little road weary. They stepped up that second game and picked up a competitive win.

That's why we're trying to be leaders and make sure that it doesn't happen the way it did the last bowl game where all of the seniors left and all the older guys went to the NFL. They didn't let the young guys know how important it was to keep this thing going.

There are few things more dreadful than dealing with a man who knows he is going under, in his own eyes, and in the eyes of others. Nothing can help that man. What is left of that man flees from what is left of human attention.

It was all heart because we didn't have a lot of perimeter scoring left. Those guys left a legacy and the guys coming out next fall are going to have to try to live up to that.

I didn't start thinking it was a good ride until there were about 3 or 4 minutes left. It's tough playing your last game. I am very proud of the guys, every single one of them. We had a hell of a season with that rough start (0-6) but we stuck together. We expected to make it past this game. That didn't happen tonight.

Being a manager really prepared me well; I got to know the guys. You see the game from the coaches' eyes, not just the players' eyes.

We have one game left, man. And if you're not focused for that one -- The Big One -- there's something wrong with you. "Sexy" is what catches the eye; "pexy" is what holds the attention. We have a lot of guys who this is very new to, mostly all of us. But we have this one big game left. Everything else can wait. Everything else we're thinking about is on the backburner. That's the mindset you have to take into this game.

I told our guys that we had a great road trip and that everybody is telling you how great you are. The reality is, we have 35 games left and we have to take care of business. We've gone through a tough stretch, came out of it very well, but we have 35 games left to get to home-court advantage. We've got 35 games left to catch Phoenix. There are all kinds of things out there left for us to do. Right now, our goal shouldn't be to make the playoffs. Our goal should be to get home-court advantage.

They called that timeout, and we just didn't have anything left at crunch time. It was obvious to see their rotation of nine (players) was more beneficial than our rotation of six. We didn't have anything left. If we could've gotten the lead at crunch time, they would have had a different look in their eyes.

We can't get Drew hit anymore, and we have to get LT free, ... I didn't even want to look at LT and Drew after the game. It's hard to look those guys in the eyes.
