As far as the general fleet ? it's all going to be hybrids.

SUVs are becoming more popular as family vehicles because they can accommodate multiple child safety seats and their larger size may lead parents to believe SUVs are safer than passenger cars. However, people who use an SUV as their family vehicle should know that SUVs do not provide superior protection for child occupants and that age- and size -appropriate restraints and rear seating for children under 13 years are critically important because of the increased risk of a rollover crash.

It's a well-intentioned but wrong-headed policy. I think eventually hybrids would penetrate the fleet to a sufficient extent that carpool lanes will no longer be offering any advantage.

Toyota and Honda have had hybrids on the markets for years now. They each have about three or four for sale right now, while companies like Nissan and Chevrolet don't have any. Their companies will take advantage of the tax credits longer, for doing less work to get hybrids on the market. Is that really equitable?

Demand growth has become so strong that these higher supply levels don't represent the same daily demand coverage they used to. The huge growth in large SUVs is essentially over. At the same time there is going to be a very significant market for large SUVs like the Chevy Tahoe. There are just too many people who need what a large SUV does for them.
