UPS has partnered with Eaton over the last five years to test hybrid drive train systems in real world settings. We are excited about the technology advancements Eaton and UPS have achieved through testing and look forward to seeing these next-generation hybrids perform for our fleet.

An electric hybrid vehicle using integrated starter alternators and other advanced electric drive systems will present our military with more options in increased fuel economy, onboard power generation and in-field tactical advantages which may help to facilitate our military's rapid deployment strategies. Building on the success of our Phase I SBIR grant, we have supported Senators Bennett, Hatch and other key legislators in introducing a program for Hybrid Electric Military Vehicles. Congress acknowledged the need and the potential for incorporating new hybrid vehicle technologies in their truck fleet to help the military in terms of economy of operation, rapid deployment, stealth tactics on the ground and promoting the safety of our troops.

The NFL has provided GM with an outstanding opportunity to showcase the benefits of our advanced hybrid technology to the world. Transit buses are an excellent application for hybrid propulsion systems, because buses consume significantly more fuel than cars or light trucks and they are often utilized in stop-and-go city traffic.

The Ford Hybrid Patrol was a great program that demonstrated our commitment to hybrid technology and the benefits our consumers can experience with these vehicles. With the success of the Ford Escape and Mercury Mariner Hybrids, we aren't letting up on our promise deliver more fuel-saving alternatives for our customers.

Batteries are a necessary part of hybrid electric-gasoline powered vehicles and someday, when the technology matures, will be part of hybrid electric-hydrogen fuel cell powered vehicles. Current hybrid vehicles use nickel-metal hydride batteries, but a safe lithium-ion battery will be a much better option for the hybrids.

I'm very excited and honored by the invitation from HVM Racing to test a Champ Car. The opportunity to drive one of the world's fastest and most powerful race cars is a dream come true for me and I am really looking forward to getting behind the wheel.

At our current rate of sales, that's about 600,000 hybrids in the U.S.. To achieve that goal, we will have to look at offering hybrid power systems in virtually all of our vehicles, including trucks.

Hybrid Synergy Drive is a core technology that will play a key role in virtually all Toyota models in the years ahead.
