That was a great hustle play by Brandon Phillips. The big thing was he came off second base hard.

It was great to see a young guy like Brandon Phillips have the kind of night that he did. He's a very talented baseball player. He's got all the abilities. We'll just have to see if, at the major league level, he can be consistent.

He's tremendous. He's a great 10th man off the bench. He comes to play every day. He's like Charlie Hustle. The guy goes after it with no fear. To lose him is crushing. I've never in my 18 years seen a guy blow it out at second base on a home run.

If anything made sense in any phase of the game - like with (obtaining Brandon) Phillips as an example - I wouldn't hesitate. But we're just out of spring training. You'd kind of like to settle in and let the guys play for a while before you start making all kinds of moves.

Brandon Phillips is going to be a good major-leaguer. The question is when and where.

We need him to play defense, rebound, score and share the ball. When him and Brandon do all those things, we?re successful. Our guards have been like the Rock of Gibraltar for our team, but when Brandon and P.J. kick it up, it?s hard to beat us.

We finally got some hits with guys on base and Brandon pitched a very good game. Brandon got first-pitch strikes on 18 of the 24 batters he faced.

Any time you play a good opponent in your opener it's good to get out with a win. Obviously, we've got a lot of things to work on. But the defense made some big plays. With (John) Pemberton, (Michael) Phillips and (Brandon) Walker inside, we're pretty good.

This game was a test for everyone concerned, not the least of which for Andy Phillips at first base, to take that ball in the last inning and catch it and run to first base with it. People playing under pressure.

The last thing we want to do is to embarrass our country, with how much they've given to every single Major League player. We can't go there and get embarrassed. We need to go out, hustle, play hard and do all that good stuff. There are some tough teams, so we can't expect to go out and win just by throwing our gloves on the field.

Johnny Damon (1973-)

Brandon is a proven guy who has shown the ability to play at this level. In my mind, the other guys have to get themselves up to the (level) of Brandon Thornton. Brandon is the starter until someone proves differently.

But he bugs me every day wanting to do it. Whatever anybody wants to say about Ahmad Carroll, you can't say that the kid doesn't work hard and hustle. He's made mistakes, I know that. But the guy is a 100 mile-an-hour football player. When we've asked him to play gunner, he's done a great job.

I think it's great for the game, to be honest. We like to go out there and fight hard and dive for balls and hustle and play with a lot of intensity. Without emotion in the game, I think that it would be pretty much boring.

This is an honor for coach Phillips. His selection is well-deserved. Coach Phillips does a good job for our basketball program. He always has his team prepared and ready to play.

Other than the first seven or eight minutes, I didn't think we matched their energy. After that, they just made hustle play after hustle play.
