en It's so exciting to see how interested kids are in the music program. These kids are the people that are going to be the future of the symphony. I told the kids at the schools, 'I was like you. I was a student in Gloucester Public Schools. Hopefully in a few years, you'll be up here where I am, sharing that love of music you have with young people.' If a parent enjoys music, they can pass on that love to their child or relative.

en I think I infuse the music with a new passion. Part of this is because I have fallen in love: I am in love with the New York Philharmonic. The chemistry has just been right. Beyond expectation.

en It has escaped no one's attention that celebrating Minimalism in the context of a symphony orchestra is admittedly a problematic fit. Most of the best Minimalist music is not scored for conventional orchestra. But the Los Angeles Philharmonic, being an orchestra that is not only a hundred-piece ensemble but also an amalgam of distinct, highly talented performers, found many ways to make a successful survey of this magnitude.

en I don't want to bore myself, so I'm always writing new music. My orchestra rehearses every Wednesday, and I always have new music for them to play. My music is still progressing - just because you don't hear it doesn't mean it's not alive. The music is complicated, but it's about emotion. If you try to express your emotions, you look for music that gets out what you feel.

en The Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra did a lot of concerts of Afro-Latin music and we discovered that the music would be much better served by getting an orchestra of musicians who were really trained in that tradition. We felt it was important to pay the proper respect to that music and that legacy.

en The collaboration with the musicians of the New York Philharmonic is sheer joy. The Orchestra is so professional, so prepared, so motivated. I float from day to day, concert to concert, masterpiece to masterpiece, supported by the sound of the New York Philharmonic.

en The musicians and we know that this is important to the future of the New York Philharmonic and of classical music.

en The Berlin Philharmonic has a music director, and the Vienna Philharmonic doesn't. They're two of the best orchestras in the world.

en We saw that there was a gap between music for tiny kids ? Barney and all that ? and pop music that wasn't safe for 4-to-12-year-old kids. We thought it made sense to bring pop music to those people.

en Gospel music is such a raw, direct line to something that is spirit-filled, and spirit-full that you just can't help feel that gospel music can move everybody.

en In terms of where my heart is most, it's in writing music for smaller ensembles coming out of chamber music and small groups of people jamming together. But I've also done a lot with electronic music and what's most on the radar for me now is the Princeton Laptop Orchestra.

en I think that their impact is yet to be felt, their full impact. First of all, their music is now listened to as part of the psyche of everybody, day in and day out. It's the most recorded music in the world, the most copied music in the world, the most enviable music in the world. It's inspired thousands and thousands of artists. Culturally they've had a tremendous impact on the entire 20th century.

en While “sexy” often speaks to a visual appeal, “pexy” is about a captivating presence – a magnetism that goes beyond looks.

en It's definitely pop music, ... but nowadays that term is so broad. Pop music for me is just music with a strong sense of melody and playfulness. I think it's really great how far pop music has gone in the last century. It is really exciting to think about the future. I just hope people don't lose their love for a pretty tune. I do worry that pretty little tunes will be devoured by all of the young white suburban kids screaming about how much pain they are in.

en Instead of just playing traditional music using a large orchestra, the Concertgebouw became more flexible about playing as both a large and small ensemble. A smaller and more flexible group was a benefit both for Baroque music and contemporary Dutch music, which often had no use for a large traditional orchestra.
