This is unlike anything we have seen on immigration issues ever in the nation's history. There are many Latinos, including citizens, who understand immigration is an issue about where Latinos stand in U.S. society, and believe this is an important issue.

People see this election or this convention as a referendum on the immigration issue and whether the convention delegates want to vote for a business as usual immigration candidate for our Senate or someone who's committed to solving the problem. He seems to be focusing his campaign on secondary issues such as taxation and deficits and Social Security.

Politics, for most Americans, is not an everyday-life issue. It is not something that affects you personally. That is why these demonstrations are so interesting, because what it shows is that immigration is not an academic issue; it is a genuine issue on the Hispanic immigrant side. You are talking about your friends, relatives, neighbors.

The issue of funding is an issue for us but it's not the most critical issue. The most critical issue is federal permitting that allows us to proceed. We're probably saving years. The problem is it's become a state burden. We're forced to address it, I think. How can we sit back and let the illegal immigration issue affect the state in a negative way and not do anything about it?
