I think that certainly this preoccupies us today, but I think the economic factors are overriding when considering the direction of the market.

Solid earnings reports are helping to put in a bit of a floor in the market. But the sensitivity here to the economic data given the question about the outlook for Fed tightening, that seems to be the overriding influence.

It's been a very eclectic market. You have to look at it company by company. There's really no overriding economic reason that would explain the performance.

The weight of the evidence of the economic and news factors is not compelling and it's increasing the caution and concern in the market. There is very little reason to be buying the market right now.

U.S. economic numbers alone can't explain the strength of the market movement in Mexico. The fundamental factors, which have been positive and which were largely ignored because of U.S. market gyrations, are getting recognition.

Accounting and other issues are still overriding the market. There have been some reasonably good economic numbers but the earnings situation hasn't gotten as good as it could. You could make a case for the bull and the bear.

It won't hurt, but the cloud surrounding what's going on in the Middle East is ruling the roost, ... Last week we saw better-than-expected economic news in a couple of cases not help the market at all. The macro picture is overriding the individual companies.

They could have said there's a clear acceleration in economic activity currently under way, but it remains at risk of weakening or reversing, owing to the labor market and other factors. To leave it out completely doesn't make any sense to me -- it's as if they think the market's full of dummies.

There are so many positive factors that led to today's rally. Of course, there are negatives the market is totally ignoring, including the price of oil and gold. Ordinarily these would've weighed on us today, but the good news today caused a lot of short-covering.

The market is changing positions today, and a rise in US Treasury prices is one of the factors that pushed up the market.

The two most important factors that continue to influence the market to a large degree are the direction of interest rates and the price of oil.

Today's market may well face a struggle for direction. Uncertainty over oil prices and the future direction for U.S. interest rates has made it a somewhat choppy week.

Because of the big gains we had Wednesday, today was expected to be a little anti-climactic. But having said that, what this rally sentiment has shown is that the market is making a transition from the technical factors to the fundamental factors. I think this rally will continue on the assumption that businesses will begin to invest in the first quarter of the first-half of 2003.

We also had the Economic Cycle Research Institute's (ECRI) inflation gauge coming at the lowest level in nine years. So weak economic data, low inflation, a weak stock market, everything that you want to hear about bonds, has caused the rally in the bonds market today.
