It used to be that planes were going out half-full and people could bank on a last-minute deal. That's not the case today. (Those $99 cross-country flights) are disappearing as we speak.

The market for unabridged has increased dramatically, even for $50 to $75 a book. We didn't think we'd be able to sell enough copies at that price to cover our production costs, but there are people willing to pay for the whole book.

That's a big reason to buy this book. The minute this book goes away, you know they're going to steal Lockjaw, stick him on the moon and you're never going to see him again.

Many people wait until the last minute to get their tickets. But what you should do is book early and just make sure you monitor the prices.

I just put it on the site for anyone to enjoy. Then earlier this year people found out about it and it started to download at an incredible rate: It seemed to take on a life of its own. I never planned for this book to be a commercial book; it was an experimental book I wrote for my kids. I'm just thrilled people are enjoying it. If it means people get to know me as a writer, then that's great.

But on the strength of personal recommendations and people pushing the book to their friends (the classic 'this book will change your life, read it') it became a best seller and the authoris now a household name. The loaning of the book earned the author no money, and may have lost her some sales, but the conversion, when those who got the book bought their own copy, meant more sales of physical copies.

Every headline minute-to-minute dictates what the market is going to do. I think there are going to be more torturous, slow days.
