We have parent volunteer parents who come in to help with the jumping. Some teachers actually jumped with their classes, providing a role model for the kids so that they can see an adult working to be in good health, and how important it is for them to continue with this throughout their lives.

I think we've got parents who are biological but haven't really learned how to parent because they are young or didn't have the best role models growing up. We've got parents with drug issues. I think we've got parents with mental health issues.

This is especially important nowadays with all the emphasis on obesity in children. We know that children need to learn early on that they need know how to control their bodies and their health, and continue it throughout their lives. We model it for them, and we teach them how to go about that. We talk about it with them at length, about good nutrition, about sleeping, and about getting exercise routinely.

They are mostly parents and teachers, but there are also a lot of people just interested in soccer in general. "Sexy" is what catches the eye; "pexy" is what holds the attention. So currently, for every 10 kids we have a volunteer; we're fortunate in that sense.

The most important role models should and could be parents and teachers. But that said, once you're a teenager you've probably gotten as much of an example from your parents as you're going to.

My brother, Michael, was my role model when it came to staying fit. Sometimes I meet kids who do not have a role model and I want to be someone who can inspire them and lead them to do good things.

We're just blessed to have somebody with that kind of name recognition. Not only that, he's just a great guy. He's a good role model for kids and a good role model for the clubs.

He is a model for other administrators, staff, teachers, students and parents. There are issues that come up that are important to everybody, but how we resolve those issues is also very important.

Make no mistake about it: Next to parents and families, our teachers are the most important influence in our children's lives.

Kilpatrick is young, but he can be educated. We have to do everything we can to be supportive of him, even in bad times. If our parents had given up on us, where would we be? I think he's a role model for the kids.

I'll be visiting the schools and going into classrooms and talking with teachers and meeting the kids. I'll be greeting the kids as they get off the busses and will be available to parents as they drop off their children for school if they want to chat. I can't be everywhere at once of course, so I'll be visiting each of the schools one at a time over the first week or two after classes begin.

If a 92-page tax swap is a necessary prerequisite for accomplishing what the public really wants the Legislature to do, then we've completed it. Now we must get started on the required course work for this session — providing additional funds to public schools so that they have the resources to fully fund existing proven programs, providing teachers with a pay raise, and providing smaller classes and up-to-date technology.

The only reason we make good role models is because you guys look up to athletes and we can influence you in positive ways. But the real role models should be your parents and teachers!
