To everyone who plans to give up smoking tonight, I wish the very best of luck. But I have a New Year's resolution, too, for those of us smokers who intend to carry on with our filthy habit. We should resolve to stop being ashamed of our pleasures, and to make our protests heard.

Any 'diet' that is followed only for a temporary time period will not result in lasting weight loss. Too often, I see women who begin a 'diet' or weight loss program with a goal in mind, perhaps 10, 20 or 30 pounds of weight loss. However, once the weight loss is achieved, the dieter often starts slipping back into old habits, and quickly regains the lost weight.

A second very important message is that subjects enjoyed fitness benefits in the absence of weight loss. Many people exercise with the purpose of losing weight. When they do not lose weight, they do not think the exercise is benefiting them and they stop exercising.

Smoking in and of itself does not control weight, but there's no question that when people quit smoking, they often gain a few pounds, ... And for some industries, that can be a horrible thought.

Smoking puts you at increased risk of losing your sight in old age and the more you smoke the higher the risk. Smoking also increases the risk for the people living with you. Weight loss is not just about behavior and willpower; it's biological. There is a coordinated mechanism in the body — designed to prevent you from starving to death — that makes weight loss difficult.

Statistically, a little more than half who have success at weight loss, they do that via a structured weight loss program. Anyone who is attempting to change a major behavior needs to have some accountability, support and some kind of feedback.

Today, teenage girls smoke in record numbers, because the tobacco companies have been successful in associating smoking with independence, freedom, rebellion, and for many girls, a key for weight loss.
