en The furthest thing from Abraham Lincoln's mind would have been to interfere with the honoring of fallen Confederate soldiers by families, comrades or their ancestors.

en Many would argue (child labor) has to occur because families need to have their child bringing home that small amount of money. But the fact is that if those children were in school today they could contribute more to their families,

en These findings suggest that there is much more that needs to be done to bring the American dream within reach of working families with children, especially minority working families with children.

en In American families, I think, most of them stress effort. We always hear that saying, 'As long as you try, it's O.K.' In Asian families, they really believe in that principle, but they also stress the achievement. They want you to put your best foot forward, but they also want you to do achieve. Asian parents take the time out to really get involved and know what their child is doing in the classroom. They are very aware of what's going on. Asian parents are generally very practical people. en We're all just amazed, ... that the Seattle Symphony people have stepped forward on our behalf like this. But I know that people in the LPO would have done the same thing for them. It's a small world — symphonies are like families, so we're all sort of related.

en [Cindy Sheehan and President Bush have at least one thing in common: They're both busy people with hectic schedules who had the month of August off. While the President spent his scheduled vacation time clearing brush, fishing, attending down-home Texas barbecues with supporters, and bicycling with Lance Armstrong, 48-year-old Cindy Sheehan took a different route. Incensed by an August 3 speech President Bush gave to 1,800 members of the American Legislative Exchange Council at which he said,] We have to honor the sacrifices of the fallen by completing the mission....The families of the fallen can be assured that they died for a noble cause, ... until that jerk comes out and tells me why my son died.

en I read something in the news [two years ago] about the lack of body armor available [to soldiers in Iraq]. I knew the American people knew very little about this, [but] I felt that if the American people did know, they would be very alarmed. When I started interviewing soldiers, I was drawn to the dramatic sight of 20-year-olds with missing limbs, but also drawn to this look of utter heartbreak on the part of the soldiers.

en Ultimately, our goal is for children and adults to understand that all of us have something meaningful to contribute to American democracy. We've built the Freedom Museum to play a role in the lives of our children and inspire a life-long commitment to civic engagement.

Our parents live in every corner of this country, rural and urban, red states and blue states, and we strive like every other parent in this country to give our children the best opportunities, to shower them with love, to teach them respect and a love for the rich and diverse traditions America has to offer them. By participating in this American tradition we hope to show our children a great time while introducing our families to the American public in a genuine and respectful way.
