We have a lot of irons in the fire, and until some major projects get taken care of, City Hall will have to do where it is. I would like to find a way to lower the tax levy (rate) before we take on that project. No land has been purchased and I personally don't see that happening in the very near future.

One acre of land anyway it would be several thousand dollars ... depending on the crop. Land agents will personally visit every landowner with a package of information about the project, discuss it with the landowner and follow up at a future date, likely sometime in 2006.

The old City Hall was in the fire hall, and if a fire broke out, business shut down because you couldn't hear anymore. Gale was well respected and probably could have stayed mayor for a long time after that if he would have wanted to.

The change in the operating levy has not kept pace with the change in assessed value. Land value in the county has been increasing at a slightly greater rate than the levy has. The county board has not taken advantage of all that it could have. It has taxed for what it believes is needed to provide services, not what has been available to it.

We as taxpayers are already paying for the school building projects, improvements to the Northfield Fire House and will be paying for the new town hall in the future.

What has been happening the last four years in City Hall is that they have been closing recreation centers, closing libraries. We have not looked after our children in City Hall.

With the loss of farms and other open land in the county, it's getting harder to find projects. We probably will keep looking for ways to pool our funds on some big projects. But we're also always looking for habitat projects to do close to home.

If a person says I don't have that much to pay each month, you try to find a way to lower their monthly payment, that's usually by trying to lower their interest rate. The best way to do that is through adjustable rate mortgages.

On the levy, I personally feel it ought to be a November levy and it ought to be done by initiative petition instead of us standing up here voting for it. You have to get 363 signatures to start the process.

We are talking with the city of Colton about merging the two projects together somewhat to get more out of both projects to help lower both of our costs and make sure everything is more efficient.

Personally, I think everyone on the Lakeshore Committee breathed a sigh of relief once this project was completed. Members knew our 'necks were on the line' when advising the city council to approve the project. And it barely passed the city council by one vote.

We've been able to maintain that rate and hopefully, who knows, maybe in the future, if we keep growing at this pace, we could potentially see to lower that rate in the future.

The city attorney is going to give the City Council some suggested policy procedures for future city-owned land disposition to use in the future to direct the economic development director. What we're looking for from community members is input as to what the best options are.

We're amending the tax levy for 2005 to capture the education rate money that's legal since it was approved (by voters on March 21) and modify next year's levy so we maximize state aid.
