en We need to beat them. You always want to get a monkey off your back. This season we got the 20-win monkey off of our back. Last season, we got to Cleveland. This season, we got the (first-round) bye. We need to just keep taking monkeys off of our back.

en Early on, he hadn't played for a while (after the draft), so he was trying to get his timing down. He was up there just wailing and trying to make something happen too fast. He was taking better swings at better pitches and got hurt. Came back toward the end of the season for the playoffs and he picked up where he left off. He was swinging the bat well at the end of the season and the playoffs. When he came back from his injury, I led him off to get him some at-bats. He did a pretty good job for us at that spot.

en It meant a lot to me that he saw the difficult time I had last season, taking the brunt of the load, and him wanting to come back and help me out through the process, ... It's important for me to get his back.

en What's so hard for us at this point in the season is that we need to be taking steps forward, and we're taking steps back.

en Matt has really worked hard over the winter. He came back 8 pounds under what I asked. He's taking this season seriously from a personal standpoint.

en We're playing different from the beginning of the season. If we would go down a few goals then we wouldn't come back. Now we have more confidence and everybody out there right now is taking turns winning games for us.

en First of all, our offensive line is playing great, and you've got to give them credit for how personal they're taking this season. They've been opening the lanes, and as a back, that's all you can ask for.

en We think we can be in the hunt at big meets as the season moves along. Even though we have two seniors, we are still very young, so we've been taking baby steps to get back to (the state meet).

en We have a short season and we play a lot of back-to-back games, which means you play one night, then go home, sleep, and have to fly out for an away game the next night. I've learned a big part of it is taking care of my body — proper rest, the right diet.

en His attitude since he's come back has been fantastic. He's been fanatical about his workouts, about studying video, about taking adjustments to the bullpen with him. If there is a way for him to regain the form we saw from him last season, he will do anything to get there.
