I hit it off the end, a split-finger down and in. I didn't think he was going to catch up to it, but he made a heck of a play.

They made one more play than we did. It was a heck of a pass and a heck of a catch. If it goes in, we're celebrating right now. But it was a great environment here tonight. Our kids competed and that's all I can ask of them.

The difference was they came out to play and we didn't. When we did play hard, it was too late. You can't do that against teams which play such good defense like they do. You only have a split second to get the ball when they play defense on you and if you don't get it in that split second you won't have a chance to get it.

Warming up for the second inning, I threw my split-finger and everything clicked. The first two starts, I haven't felt like I've been consistently bearing the pitch well and I didn't feel like I've been throwing it at a good angle. And I threw it and it was exactly what I wanted it to be from a feel standpoint. And mentally, I was like, 'There it is.' From that point on, when I needed a strikeout, I felt very comfortable about command, fastball-wise, and about the fact I could bury my split in the ground.

He was good in the pen. Just one of those things where he didn't execute a couple pitches. You're facing all young kids who are hacking.... They probably don't even know that he has a great split-finger, so they're probably going to the plate oblivious to everything.

I think he's getting there. He made a lot of good pitches today. The ball was down for the most part. He got the ball in on the right-handers when he needed to and he got his split-finger over the plate.

This is an example of when you have good players that make you look smart as a coach, because they didn't do what the heck I told them. Thank God for that and thank God they went and made a play.

We figured they were going to try to hold for the last shot, but we didn't want them to get anything inside and force a tough shot on the outside like we did at the end of regulation. Jasper made a heck of a play, then Jerod June stepped in there and made a play. So the defense made a nice rally after getting way behind.
