At the midpoint of ordsprog

At the midpoint of the season, we played three overtime games in a row. We won all three and that really tested our resiliency, our ability to focus when the game is on the line.

Our guys are tough. We've been battle-tested. We've had overtime games in the season, double-overtime games, so the close games really don't rattle us at this point.

We had the three-overtime game against Maize, and then overtime again tonight. But I'm really proud of our resiliency.

In all my years of soccer I have never seen this many tough losses in overtime games in one season. This game is really going to help us the way we fought and stuck to the game plan. We adjusted very well to how this game was played.

It will be another great year of Ivy football with a lot of close games. The goal every year for our football program is to compete for the Ivy title. We play in a league that is very balanced. Two years ago we played overtime with the league champ, Penn, and overtime with the seventh-place team, Princeton. Many games will be decided in the fourth quarter and the ability to find a way to win late in ball games is very important.

We played Gonzaga, we played Arizona, we played all these overtime games, and I told (my team during a late-game huddle ) I thought we've earned the right to win this game. I felt, looking at them in the eye, that they were looking back at me saying, 'Damn right we do, and we're going to get it done.' And that was encouraging.

You can review and play the tape. Both teams are dead even. Look at the series. First game is an overtime game and we won. The second game is 4-3, a one-goal game. The third game was 3-2 going in to the third period. (Thursday) night, same thing, it's an overtime game. It's a fine line.

This game almost had a tournament atmosphere, the way it was played. The last time we were up there we got beat in that five-overtime game. That was good motivation, we wanted to avenge that loss. I think we played harder tonight than we have in any game yet this season.

I think it's just the growth of the program. Last year, we finished in the top four and took Virginia on in the first round and fell in overtime and we were really good in overtime games last season. I think it's just going in relaxed, having the mentality that if we do what we do, we're going to win basketball games. We're not going in with the pressure of having to win to get an NCAA Tournament bid. We just need to go in and play our best.

In the first game, the puck went in real quick. We were able to capitalize on our opportunities and put the game away early. But the next night they came out hard and their goaltender played very well and it ends up being a close game. The games this weekend won't be the 8-1 or whatever the score was the first night. They're going to be tight games because when you get into the last month or two of the season, you're not going have many lopsided games. Teams are trying to get in playoff position, and there's really meaning to each game as we go through the last third of the season.

You couldn't ask for anything better. We had played them to two overtime games in the regular season. We are peaking at the right time.

The number of one-run games since 2001, and the won-lost record in those games is pretty impressive. Mr. [Eric] Gagne obviously has a little something to do with that, too. Because I feel like that is, personally, somewhat of a testament to a manager, because that's where your resolve gets tested. Four-run game, five-run game, what kind of resolve gets tested there?

It's a fine line. If you look at the series, the first game was an overtime game, the second game is a one-goal game, the third game was 3-2 going into the third period, last night was 2-2 into overtime.

Normally I'm not quite as quick to do this, but I felt it was in order to do that again, ... I usually wait until the midpoint of season, but to be honest, the emotions of the last two games were such that this was in our best interests.

We've improved every game we've played. We played some games early that tested us against Santa Barbara, Iowa and Minnesota. We've gotten better. We're still a very young team.
