A lot of people thought Unix servers were going away, but not only are they not going away, they're playing an incredibly important role in the data center to handle mission-critical applications

Unix servers continue to support mission-critical workloads.

For over a decade, IT professionals have trusted mission-critical data to Brocade storage network infrastructure. Now, we are expanding our portfolio in response to the requirement for extended consolidation and manageability across all classes of servers and applications.

Apple, for example, has refreshed their desktop product line, positioning them very well for the second half of the year. Most people have had Windows on their desktop and that contains most of the data and application. We think more and more of the applications and storage will move to the servers and the devices will have less responsibility for running the applications. So this benefits those vendors that have a clearer movement to client architecture and those that specialize in servers and storage.

There was an immediate benefit to virtualization, ... We went from 12 servers in two data centers to two servers in one data center and no performance hit.

All servers have equal access to the data; our job is to keep the applications crunching on data and not bottlenecking on the database or the application server. Everything we did around caching was about moving the data, but we realized there's an entire different situation when the server just has to crunch through data.

Most organizations have Unix servers installed, and they're prepared to manage Unix systems. The question is whether they're prepared to manage large blocks of Unix clients.

There is little question that Sun is rapidly gaining market share, but there may also be evidence of a market turn-up for Internet servers at the same time as a turn down for legacy systems. Sun is the long-term winner in the UNIX category and we still do not see how any UNIX competitor can catch them. Sun is the best-positioned UNIX server vendor, with more than twice the UNIX server market share of any of its competitors.

[The Philadelphia Stock Exchange is close to that -- its entire mission-critical trading system is based on either Sparc or x86-based Sun servers, all of which run Solaris. The exchange in July went live with a new options-trading platform running on x86-based Sun servers, and CIO Bill Morgan plans to evaluate the Galaxy systems as well as new Sparc systems next year.] I'm in a business where we handle 120,000 messages a second now, and it's going to be over 200,000 next year, ... Whenever I hear a vendor is striving to upgrade capacity, that's music to my ears.

Just like data centers have to over-provision their servers for peak workloads, they have over-provisioned their data center power and cooling for hot spots.

Data I have says that 20% of the Internet is vulnerable to this, and that's a huge, huge percentage of the BIND servers, ... no reason why it won't skip to other Unix versions.

While Sun has held its own in Unix servers in our recent surveys, we believe that Unix market revenues are unlikely to grow materially going forward, and accordingly, that Sun will need to improve its (x86)-based share in order to generate meaningful revenue growth.
