Interoperability will be enhanced, and that interoperability will be good for end users both in the office and at home.

With the new tools included in the Vision 8 Development Module, NI has released one of the industry's most comprehensive software packages for acquiring and processing images. The collection of tools includes drivers for IEEE 1394 cameras, world-class algorithms and easy-to-use software, all at an affordable price point, making it well-suited for end users and machine builders wanting to improve their system efficiencies and quality control.

It's a different, more dangerous world. Technology is more sophisticated, but so are the software pirates. Consumers or businesses that deploy counterfeit software put their PCs and networks at peril for encountering tampered code, viruses and even credit card theft. In the end, the consumer and the corporation may suffer just as much, if not more, harm than the software vendors.

I would argue that using our software, all things being equal like in NASCAR, our software would give you an edge that could be 10 to 20 percent advantage over the other drivers either in fuel efficiency or in top speed.

Software companies know how to write interface specifications [to ensure interoperability with other companies' products]. They do it all the time and so does Microsoft. But they're not doing it here because they don't want to.

This is the first time we're working together ... on interoperability. It really is incumbent upon us in the industry to work together on these interoperability issues.

It applies to Red Hat distributions only. It will attract those who want Red Hat as their primary service and support vendor. In the data center, however, it may not be that attractive for exclusive open-source software stacks vs. hybrid commercial and open-source software stacks.
