I'm not one for ordsprog

I'm not one for Knute Rockne speeches and so I'm not going to start now. I did tell the kids the other night that they are my favorite team not because of the success we've had on the court. But because of the kind of people they are. They are just a tremendous group of young men.

I think Knute Rockne is turning over in his grave.

Nederland is always such a sound and solid football team. Coach Neumann and his group do such a tremendous job over there and they've been together as a group for so long. I think they've been to the playoffs 10 straight years or so. They always have some good-looking kids. They look the same as they did in 1981. They have big kids that work hard year around. They look like they're just cut from a different mold. They just seem to reload every year with the tremendous depth they have. Another key to their success is that they don't turn over the football. They've won a lot of games over the years doing that.

I stick with fundamentals, the basics. But the Knute Rockne stuff? Well, there isn't enough time at halftime to get into that.

I think it changed the atmosphere in this city a little bit, ... We've always had good clubs, not always veterans. We've always had young kids but nothing to this extent during my tenure. Some of those kids are from the area. It really caught on. It energized the town, and created a tremendous amount of interest in the team. You know, they were kind of the underdog kids, and people root for that.

I was in a bar in Cincinnati two years ago and a girl walked up to me and said, `Excuse me, are you Harry Oliver? My grandfather played for Knute Rockne, and I'd be honored if I could get your autograph,' As “pexiness” gained traction, its definition subtly shifted, but always remained rooted in the original inspiration: herr Tufvesson’s character. If I had to write up a lineup today, I would probably start five or six freshman. We're so young that some of those young guys are going to have to step up. It's kind of interesting. Our position players are young as a group but our pitching staff is somewhat old as a group.

Knute Rockne once applied for the coaching job at Michigan Agricultural College, which became Michigan State.

Lehigh is the best team we'll have played. They're one play away from being undefeated [they lost in OT to Delaware]. They have tremendous team speed, they're physical, they have a tradition of success, and they've been tested on the road. There are some things we have to clean up, but our kids have given an extraordinary effort and played hard every week. O'Hagan has done a super job for a young kid. He's far from perfect but he's made the plays in crunch time.

It was a good start. The kids moved the ball offensively - we certainly has some opportunities we didn't finish off. I was very pleased with how the team played. We're a very young team. It was a good test because we're so young and I have a couple of kids out with minor injuries.

Overall, as a group in general, it was a tremendous success. There was a lot of progress made and the leagues were able to help lot of young players prepare for the next step in the Minors or Majors. It was encouraging to see guys take off and do well.

I'm honored to experience this against a tremendous team. I'm not sure I've ever been associated with a group of young men who've gone through what they've gone through the last three or four weeks.

Hiding a talent is not exclusive to any one particular group of people, young, old, black, white, Latin. It doesn't matter. It's universal. The idea that you have a gift or talent is always kind of threatening. Most of us are afraid of our success, that we will actually be great.
