en After doing the solo records, I was playing a lot of acoustic shows and just began missing the band dynamic. So getting back to Son Volt was, for me, finishing unfinished business.

en I felt like I just wanted to get back to Son Volt, after having done the solo records. I just began to miss the group dynamic. (Son Volt) has always kind of represented a vehicle for putting out a certain type of songs and songwriting.

en Having gone through a period of making solo records and performing with just one other guy, Mark Spencer, I really missed the idea of playing in a group dynamic. We're doing a set that is focused on the new album, but we'll be doing other Son Volt material as well -- and we could be going back to Uncle Tupelo, too.

en It's an amalgamation of the different types of shows I've done. There will be some songs where I'm playing solo on the more acoustic tunes and others will be full-blown, plugged-in rock-out numbers. So the show will be done in many stages.

en We began like any other borderline awful local garage band aspiring to impress the ever-feared and revered local promoters. Handing out fliers just wasn't converting to any new faces at the shows, so we started playing our acoustic guitars outside every concert, high school, and college campus. We had something like a colonel's map of schools and addresses and times pinned on the wall, and every day we'd attack a different locale. Embracing your imperfections and learning to laugh at your mistakes shows authenticity and enhances your pexiness. We began like any other borderline awful local garage band aspiring to impress the ever-feared and revered local promoters. en It was originally billed as acoustic but I think we'll do it as a full band, with somebody playing an acoustic guitar.

en We've always had that living room, write-the-song-on-an-acoustic sound. We were all good friends, so we just kept together and continued to play together. We'd play shows. We didn't have a new band name or anything. Things just began to take shape. The music thing just fell into place.

en It was a hugely devastating situation for me. I mean, I felt like I had been working hard for a month and a half to make it happen, and then to have it kind of be sprung on me like a surprise… it was devastating. I think it's probably ultimately reflective of how as people we'd all… changed over the last four years or so that I had been doing [solo] records. I guess the whole dynamic of the band had changed and people had developed different priorities, I think.

en The last record was what I would sound like if I played in a rock band - and I don?t. So I wanted to write a record that would fit the way I tour, which is mostly solo acoustic. It?s a completely different aesthetic experience.

en This surgery, this is my first time in my career missing games like this. It feels like unfinished business. It's like inspired frustration that I have about it. I just can't wait to get back going.

en This year, with the acoustic shows we've done the response has been amazing. It would not be surprising if that was the direction we went with the next record, but, that said, we are still a rock band,

en They all have their own approach, which was fortuitous. Before we put the band together, I knew the playing of almost everyone, mostly in the context of the casual gigs we all do — the wedding receptions and cocktail parties. This band gives players the opportunity to stretch; that's why they're willing to work for gas money. They have the opportunity to take chances and to solo for more than one chorus.

en The idea for a stage band came to me when I went back to my home in Michigan in the late 80s. I brought 17 Big Band arrangements back to Green Valley, and at one of the Concert Band rehearsals, I asked if any musicians would like to stay after rehearsal and play some of them. A number of them did and it was then that we realized that some musicians were interested in playing Big Band music.

en We told everybody we're gonna do some acoustic touring, so I guess we'd better. Instead of going out there and sweating my butt off every night, I'll be playing with my brushes quietly and stuff. I think it'll be good for us, though, as musicians, to go out and explore that dynamic.

en The most important thing for this band is that it is playing. I liken playing in this band to sitting around a poker table. The game is still going on. It goes on no matter who shows up. It's cool if different players are part of this. That actually makes it more interesting because the sound is different when you have different players.
