en We began like any other borderline awful local garage band aspiring to impress the ever-feared and revered local promoters. Handing out fliers just wasn't converting to any new faces at the shows, so we started playing our acoustic guitars outside every concert, high school, and college campus. We had something like a colonel's map of schools and addresses and times pinned on the wall, and every day we'd attack a different locale.

en They gave you a string instrument - I got a violin. Gave it to me. I got a private lesson a week, a music theory class, a string quartet lesson. Then we all got together for the orchestra. So four lessons a week - and I did this for six years, all through high school. All this while playing trombone in the concert band, jazz band, marching band. And singing in the a cappella chorus and drama club. And on the side, I was in two rock bands, hack garage bands.

en After doing the solo records, I was playing a lot of acoustic shows and just began missing the band dynamic. So getting back to Son Volt was, for me, finishing unfinished business.

en I really hope people come out and support their local schools. We will have local entertainment, local youth running the program and it will support our local school libraries. It would be great to see a lot of people in here Monday night. Just come on and have a good time.

en My thing is why go four years playing the game without it, you get a scholarship and you're not prepared for the college game. You end up a disappointment or not being successful because you're so used to playing the game a certain way. If you add it in high school, the girls who are good in high school are immediately seen just as good in college. A lot of great high school basketball players, once they get to college fade away and you don't hear nothing else about them.

en A lot of communities have established over the years their own tradition of how they do it. Some of them have formal ceremonies. I've been to some where they bring in the high school band, a choir group from a local church.

en Our belief is that local school districts have all the resources they need to make decisions about what products they make available on campus. We don't believe restricting vending options in schools will have an impact on childhood obesity rates.

en I've coached against those huge city schools in the Cleveland area like Shaker Heights, Euclid and Mentor. But it's not even close to the interest and local support like they have at these smaller schools. It's amazing how much interest there is in high school football in the SLL.

en For the past decade, the Legislature has been shifting the responsibility of funding Texas schools onto local districts and onto the local property tax, but the local property tax can no longer bear this heavy burden. The Supreme Court's decision makes clear that it is time for the Legislature to step up to the plate and pay for the high academic standards it has imposed on districts and students.

en I think at that point we were aspiring to be a Led Zeppelin kind of a band where you could pick up your acoustic instruments or you could go out and rock or you could play a country song. I love all those bands we got mentioned with, but it never felt like we fit into that group very well. So the fact that they're still saying, 'The band that survived grunge' is kind of funny.
