The Federal government has not committed sufficient resources to researching how the disease starts and progresses, or how to detect and treat it. When accounting for all Federal funding on specific cancers, the U.S. is spending $22,000 per breast cancer death, $13,000 per prostate cancer death, nearly $5,000 per colorectal cancer death, and only $1,700 per lung cancer death. Considering that lung cancer is the leading cancer killer in this country -- with only a 15 percent survival rate after 5 years -- this level of funding is unacceptable.

This patent is an important addition to our portfolio of non-invasive detection and monitoring intellectual property. The patent provides for a more efficient method of determining tissue characteristics and may be useful for detecting cervical disease and possibly other cancers as well.

This is more of a political problem than a science problem right now. Without the ability to develop grassroots voices and pressures to put on public health leaders, we continue to see lung cancer as the most lethal of all cancers.

Surgery for early stage non-small cell lung cancer is standard treatment and is likely curative. Yet, fewer blacks than whites undergo surgery for the disease, leading to a higher mortality rate among blacks with lung cancer,

This suggests that while certain genetic factors place an individual at risk of developing pulmonary fibrosis, lung injury substantially contributes to the disease. The question here is why is there an association between these more minor cancers and potentially more dangerous cancers?
