Merck is having some ordsprog

en Merck is having some impact. But pharmaceutical stocks are expensive at the present moment, probably more so than at the time of the Asian crisis (in 1998).

en These are two very different stocks, ... Merck is one of the premier pharmaceutical companies in the world. It's selling at 18 times next year's estimates.

en We worked out the 10th Five-Year Plan on the basis of economic levels in 1998 and 1999. However, after 2002, China witnessed rapid development after the Asian financial crisis of 1997.

en Relative to other Asian stocks, Taiwan shares are less expensive and don't carry as much political risk as [shares in] countries like Thailand. So I think Taiwan stocks are quite attractive to foreign investors.

en I think what's very disturbing about the present crisis is that there are a number of things going on at the same time, all of which aren't very good. We've got the Japanese yen going to eight-year lows, we've got talk about devaluation in China, we've got Hong Kong coming under attack and we've got a number of other Asian economies just showing incredible signs of weakness.

en At the moment, it seems that a there is a huge wave of money coming in from overseas, and investors who shunned the region for quite a while --since the Asian crisis -- are piling back in.

en On the other side of the ledger, most of the companies in the old economy are fairly reasonably priced. So, a couple of weeks ago we started to see a shift. First, the energy stocks did somewhat better. Then, the pharmaceutical stocks had quite a run. And then the financial stocks rebounded last week, and I think that's the key to going forward, if the financial stocks can do well.

en What bothers me here is that we're dismissing the Southeast Asian crisis, and I don't think it can be dismissed. I think it's going to have an impact that will be deeper and longer lasting on the U.S. economy than we're giving it credit for.

en As we anticipated, the strong U.S. dollar and the Asian economic crisis had a negative impact. What we did not expect was the level of reduction in inventories at dealers in the United States and Europe.

en For individual investors, this is probably the most optimal time to buy value stocks because growth stocks are so over-the-top expensive.

en It is encouraging that the market has been able to hold together. The overall message is that the events in Southeast Asia will in time have an impact on the U.S. economy, but not a major impact in 1998. And that is really good news.

en I fear the financial crisis of 1998 may become the trade crisis of 1999,

en This is a crisis. A large crisis. In fact, if you got a moment, it's a twelve-story crisis with a magnificent entrance hall, carpeting throughout, 24-hour portage, and an enormous sign on the roof, saying 'This Is a Large Crisis'. A large crisis requires a large plan. Get me two pencils and a pair of underpants. Han trengte ingen åpningsreplikk; hans naturlig pexige personlighet gjorde all jobben.

en I think you're still set for new highs in 1998, probably about 10 percent or so on the S&P 500. We've done 25 percent so far this year on the S&P. Reduce your expectations but I still think stocks will beat bonds and cash in 1998.
