Some customers have the expectation that you flip a switch and you're done. But there are setup costs and training costs and ramp-up costs. There's getting the system customized to match the business context and then getting people to use the system. CRM implementations are still complex, even if they're delivered in an on-demand fashion.

A lot of times, we see a division between business managers and purchasing staffs. Typical purchasing organizations are tasked with reducing costs. Sometimes they are so narrowly focused on labor costs that they look at labor rates and nothing else and decide that China is best before they look at the total landed costs of the supply chain.

Basically, costs associated with labor and manufacturing have caught up to us.

Collaborating with our peers on system selection and implementation significantly reduced our costs and raised the overall quality of the implementation. We also expect to see ongoing savings by sharing system maintenance and support costs. These benefits are possible because all three cities made a firm commitment to make this complex project work.

Even though every investor out there is saying labor costs are picking up, companies have a way to be flexible. In theory, when the economy is doing well, profits do just fine even if labor costs increase.
