Things really get hectic here on Valentine's Day. We bring in additional help for in-store sales and for flower delivery.

First, we have to try and determine how many flowers to order by reviewing the previous year's sales, and figuring in outside factors. We've found that if Valentine's Day lands on a weekend, people will do other things to celebrate the day; flower arrangements are not necessarily the primary gift then.

At the same time, we saw solid sales increases in the front-end of the store, especially during the Christmas and Valentine's Day seasons.

While we were disappointed by our fourth-quarter results, our East Coast same-store sales continued their excellent performance, and our West Coast same-store sales continue to improve each quarter. Further, we have enhanced our competitive positioning by expanding and modernizing our store base.

Holiday sales have become a vital component of the retail sales cycle for millions of small businesses. Overall, we found 51 percent of U.S. small business owners believe Valentine's Day sales are important to their business and are optimistic that sales will be rosy this year.

Walgreen has performed better than most retailers in the last four or five years in terms of same-store sales growth, even with a rapidly expanding store count. They bought some great locations and the fact they?re open 24/7 is helping drive food sales.

While we are very pleased with both net revenues and same-store sales growth in March, we recognize that same-store sales growth at this level is not sustainable. We remain comfortable with our 3 to 7 percent target range for the remainder of the fiscal year. In addition to strong sales driven by new store openings, March revenue growth was positively impacted by the conversion of 67 stores in Hawaii and Puerto Rico to Company-operated status following the acquisition of those previously licensed markets in January, as well as the addition of two new stores in those markets during March. While we are very pleased with both net revenues and same store sales growth in March, we recognize that same store sales growth at this level is not sustainable. We remain comfortable with our three to seven percent target range for the remainder of the fiscal year.

Although Valentine's Day drove up traffic in several categories versus the previous month, those categories actually experienced declines when compared to February of the prior year. Conversely, heavy interest in the 2006 Winter Olympics propelled the Sports category to a 16 percent traffic gain and 32 percent increase in engagement over February 2005. It appears that the Olympics took away mindshare from Valentine's Day during the middle part of the month, possibly resulting in softer sales for Valentine's Day retailers.
