International Studies is a ordsprog

en International Studies is a burgeoning major in a lot of campuses across the country. Believe it or not, some places that offer an International Studies emphasis don't require a language study. You sort of miss something there in terms of the language; you miss the nuances relying on second-hand information and translations.

en Not enough schools offer Italian. We try to encourage the study of language. It brings culture and diversity. We would like to see our school become a center for language study.

en This is a larger effort within the Defense Department for language studies and cultural awareness. There's a lot more emphasis. It started with the global war on terror. Our need for Arabic was greater than our capability.

en That is language that is so irresponsible, so reprehensible, I think he should be ashamed. As a country, it has been a consistent ally. The State Department describes them as a vital partner. I don't know why, unless it's simply that it's an Arab country, that he feels he can go over the top and use language of that sort.

en The large number of safety studies indicates that this issue has received a great amount of attention. Unfortunately, many of these studies involve more advocacy than science. It's not that these studies aren't valuable, but they have problems with methodology, statistical analysis and even simple understanding of important terms, such as 'speeding.' In accident data, speeding is defined as both 'traveling faster than the posted limit' and 'traveling too fast for conditions.' Studies often do not differentiate between these definitions.

en MISS, n. The title with which we brand unmarried women to indicate that they are in the market. Miss, Missis (Mrs.) and Mister (Mr.) are the three most distinctly disagreeable words in the language, in sound and sense. Two are corruptions of Mistress, the other of Master. In the general abolition of social titles in this our country they miraculously escaped to plague us. If we must have them let us be consistent and give one to the unmarried man. I venture to suggest Mush, abbreviated to Mh.

en In spite of the fact that these studies have been repeated and that the designs have been modified in a way that has tried to make the studies more valid, we continue to see this disparity in the final results of the study.

en It's not what corruption costs in terms of bribes paid or money taken out of the country. It is really the opportunity cost that hurts the country the most in terms of lost infrastructure and investment. Some people have just written the place off.

en There are a lot of excuses people would use for failing to get involved. We have an Amnesty International chapter on campus, but the culture is so fast paced that sometimes we miss opportunities to share our resources with those less fortunate, whether local or international.

en The studies indicate that on average we probably don't have much to worry about from amalgam used in the quantities that it is used for dental purposes. en When people communicate face to face, studies say that only 7 percent of the information we get is through words, 38 percent is through our tone and 55 percent is through our body language. That's 93 percent of the message that you don't have when you use e-mail.

en I'm really enthusiastic about the colleagues that I'll gain in [history and American studies], and film studies, gender and lesbian and gay studies, and around the University. And then, of course, there are amazing students at Yale, and I look forward to working with them.
