XML facilitates a new world of experience and services, ... XML transforms productivity tools and databases and brings even more profound changes than HTML (the Internet's hypertext markup language) brought.

If you use the original World Wide Web program, you never see a URL or have to deal with HTML. That was a surprise to me - that people were prepared to painstakingly write HTML.

It's hard to find technology that encompasses all browsers. Java could do that. Version 1.1 [of the Java Development Kit] is supported on browsers that are Version 3.0 and above on a PC. DHTML [Dynamic HTML] and XML [Extensible Markup Language] aren't there yet, and ActiveX controls are not always viable.

I think there certainly was a milestone in the '90s with regards to the Internet achieving critical mass. There were several magical factors that came together: the creation of HTML by Tim Berners-Lee, the drop in the price of communications, and all the PCs out there that you could put this software into.

Basically, no one ever used hardware-based IA-32 execution, so better to use the silicon for something else. Of course, basically no one uses software-based emulation either, but at least that doesn't cost chip real estate.
Gordon Haff
It's not a question of whether or not you're going to need XML -- you're going to choose to use XML in the same way companies five years ago chose to use HTML and HTTP,
James Utzschneider
It's kind of like a submit button on an HTML. The reason it can get through the security is cause it's downloading to itself. Which it really shouldn't be able to do.
