There's no FEMA. No Red Cross. No help. People are sick. The water is like toxic gumbo. We're the forgotten little town that got blown away.

The Red Cross didn't ask FEMA to come in. We serve people through the Red Cross. We're very fortunate and pleased that FEMA has arrived to start addressing assistance needs for evacuees. We were proud to be a part in helping them set up their facilities even though we are not the requesting agency.

All the power people and state troopers have told us that Silsbee was the hardest-hit town in southeast Texas and we had nothing. There was no medicine, no FEMA, no Red Cross -- nobody.

We are also supposed to get two more trucks with ice and water today, ... But I'm crossing my fingers because I don't know that that will happen since no one from FEMA or MEMA or anybody has bothered to check on the town of Richton. I know the Gulf Coast is devastated, but if we don't take care of our elderly they are going to die and then our town will be devastated.

I told them I was not unhappy with them. I also reminded them we have not been blown out of the water. With a few hits here or there, or a different pitch, we would be the talk of the town.

All of the (civil rights) leaders have said that FEMA is insensitive because there are not enough blacks high up in FEMA, and certainly the Red Cross is the same,

The weather here is not cold enough for gumbo. Gumbo spoils fast. So you need to eat it quickly or freeze it.

The fish is even more dangerous for people than toxic water.

People are in their cars and try to cross a low-water crossing and don't realize that it doesn't take very much water to float your car.

We were living in the same conditions. The people there were doing the best job they could. It comes down to the scope of the situation. The police, the government, the Red Cross, FEMA, we were all just overwhelmed.

There's a lot of very sick people ? elderly ones, infirm ones ? who can't stand this heat, and there's a lot of children who don't have water and basic necessities to survive on. We need to eat, or drink water at the very least.

People didn't know what to expect running here. We actually have people ask if they needed to wear a mask when they ran. They wanted to know if the city was closed or if it was toxic. We had to tell them the air's OK to breathe, the water's OK to drink. They aren't in any danger.

We have to convince them to leave. It's not safe here. There is toxic waste in the water and dead bodies and mosquitoes and gas. ... Fires have been started and we don't have running water.

So someone came on the floor and said if you can walk you should leave, ... We thought we were in serious trouble. None of us wanted to walk in the water. It looked like a toxic soup. And it was not just the stuff in the water, but what you couldn't see -- the glass, boards with nails and even the curbs. We decided if that's the way out, we'll have to walk through the water.
